I actually keep a larger version of the Spyderco on hand for quick touch ups. Mine is a Lansky. If you never let the edge go completely, they work great for bringing it back to life fast.

I own the Spyderco sharpener and it is at fantastic quick sharpening on blades in decent shape as SGH points out. Highly recommend it for maintenance purposes. Never without it at deer camp.

What do you guys think about these style of knife sharpeners vs the flat wet stones?

i would find that difficult to use on my single beveled knifes and one in particular with a full flat side bevel on one side and full hollow back side that has to be a 64 rockwell in hardness. get some practice in with the king, you will need to flatten it at some point as mentioned, sand paper on some plate glass works. the king is a little soft which makes it a faster stone to sharpen with but it will also hollow faster

I have used that sharpener for 20 years. Works great.

Please forgive the hijack. But speaking of sharpening knives. Look what arrived today. Yeah I know it’s old school with all the new gadgets out there. But it is how I did it my whole life. Some habits die hard.

Someone has a job :) That setup ain't cheap!

That’s a fine one for sure. The Dans are (in my experience) cut square, flat and lapped to perfection. They are right on par with the vintage Norton/Pike and Norton/Behr stones.
    Enjoy it my friend.

Quick question. Do you know was that one sold as a “true hard” black or a “surgical” black?

its a black surgical ultra fine, never seen one before.  my high end ginsu, yes they use to make one, gets chippy off the diamond hone that i have at camp should mellow out with this and my fillet knives will be happy.  got tired of bringing my japanese whetstone back and forth to camp, i like to have a stone next to the fillet board when cutting fish for the one swipe

That is what i like about Dans. What makes it an "ultra fine" is their lapping process. Dans lap some of their black and translucent stones to what would equal 16,000+ grit equivalent. Truly the equal of the coveted vintage Norton stones.

Tried the ole Arkansas on a cheapo just playing around. For a free handed edge by an old blind man, it turned out quite impressive.

Notice the semi polished  look on the edge. That it straight off the Arkansas stone. No strop, no paper, no glass.

always liked the natural stones.  only knife i have that sees a pasted strop is the straight edge and then its sharpened on newspaper, then cowhide, then horsehide. but then the palm of my hand in a pinch when i dont have the barber strop

Starting to really like the India followed by Arkansas results. It produces a highly “usable” working edge.

same company, this one has a vg-1 core which sharpens as well as the vg-10 in a shun. i also have the original ginsu that was made before they changed the name to ginsu for the commercials but i only use it for cutting cans
