Thanks—like your taste in beers too! Really just looking for another cooker I can enjoy as much as my Egg but is different and can do something new. You ever smoke on it?
Yeah I did a turkey and that pic above with the Parrish stout that chuck roast went for like 8 hour range for pulled beef. It smokes just like the egg but the PK excels at grilling.

    @DMW
@BBBQ - I have a Hasty Bake Legacy and I have to say it's my favorite cooker for grilling. It's easy to setup for two zone and the adjustable fire box is really nice if you start out indirect and then want to sear.

@BBBQ absolutely could recommend either the PK or the Hasty Bake. They are different animals but share many good attributes.
    - I share DMW's points above. The Suburban is my second HB. I initially had a Legacy that I gifted to my sister. After I retired I waited a couple of years then purchased the Suburban. Its exactly the same main grate size as the Legacy. Difference is added height in cooking chamber, second level grate, bi-fold door lid, and option of running 2 Rotis units.  The crank up firebox is nice. Most folks will tell you that the "grill, bake, smoke" position are the order in which the grill excels. At times I see that logic but the HB has wins at the Royal and MIM. You can burn lump or briquettes. Lately I have been burning B&B char logs and have had great results. My suburban likes to run in the 250°- 280° range smoking. Find it easier to dial in any temp in the 325° - 450° range. Any thing above thats a cinch by cranking the firebox up under cooking grate. I am pretty sure there are some youtube videos about BurnCo BBQ on the web their restuarant cooks on a fleet of HB's.
    - The Pk can do the grill, bake, smoke thing also. However you need to be a little more creative. Mine is the original PK so am limited on grate space. Not sure why but my PK makes the best plate ribs in my herd of grills. I think the PK is the favorite grill in the SCA comps. I have a set of grill grates for my PK. They work great but I dont see much difference from when I use the same grill grates on the HB.
Neither of these grills in my opinion is a one trick pony. Not knocking either, however if you are thinking of spending PK 360 money I would do your homework between that and the HB Legacy.
Above in your thread I mentioned the Weber Kettle or the PK with the Carson Rodizio which would work with either of those grills.
One thing you can appreciate about this forum is the pedigree of the cookers that have been recommended Hasty Bake (1948), PK (1952), Weber (1952). All 3 companies have withstood the test of time, they must be doing something right.

Really appreciate all the great tips given here--learned a lot as I always do from this group. I think I'm going to go with the Hasty Bake Legacy. I like the fact that it's unique (no one around here has one), has a great history, has a cult following, and can do some things other grills cannot at its price point in terms of the side door access and adjustable charcoal height. I like that it can be a solid smoker, seems like it could be a heck of a rotisserie, and could make a two-zone on a rectangular pattern that a circular grill just can't (unless you go real big, which I don't want to do). So happy birthday to me, I think. I'll post pics and thoughts once I get it. PK still stood out as really cool and really portable, but just not as flexible and not a lot of capacity which is something I'd like to have for big parties to augment my Large.

I hope everything works out for you. I actually liked my legacy better than the gourmet. Pretty sure you will breeze through the learning curve. The HB folks in Tulsa are real helpful if you have any fire management questions.
Pretty sure if you haven't yet you will look at some of "arnietex" youtube videos cooking on the Legacy.

Fired up the Hasty Bake for some smoking. Makes me realize what’s great about the Egg and what’s not. This thing is a cinch to clean and start and has huge grate space. Temp control is another matter. Very imprecise borderline voodoo damper situation. All about how you build and feed the fire. Almost a stick burner in that sense! But damn tasty food—maybe better in terms of flavor than an Egg. Time will tell but I got my bday wish of a good new toy.

Nice work cleaning that thing up.  It nearly looks like new!

Very nice - I’ve had a Hasty Bake for over 20 years and recently purchased a new gourmet.  Temp control has a learning curve, but you will get there.  Next time you need a new toy, look into the rotisserie for your HB.  It’s one of my favorite ways to cook.

I've had my Gourmet 7 yrs now and a Legacy for 3yrs prior to that. You will get the hang of temp control in no time. When I first got it I played around with it empty for a few runs then added a drip pan with water on the cooking grates to try and maintain temps.
I have found the first place to drop temp is the exhaust damper adjustment then if not satisfied intake damper. If all else fails lower the FB into the ash pan for quick drop in temp.
Totally agree with the above post concerning rotis. Its a great add on.
BTW your grill cleaned up great. Keep the fires lit.

Amazing what some simple green and a lot of elbow grease will do. Powder coat on there is impressive too. Next step is to touch up in a few spots where there is rust with some sanding, acetone, then high-heat spray paint. Hopefully it will be good for another 30 years! Ordered some replacement internal parts but all in all this thing is in remarkable condition. Based on the handle someone dated it to about 2003.

Thanks @6baluts and @mEGG_My_Day! Definitely have my eye on the rotisserie. And thanks for the vent tips. I did get a bit of a hang of it by the end of the book. Truly loved feeding the charcoal in that side door without having to pull out the whole grate etc. Felt kind of like feeding a locomotive!

@BBB sign up for the HB newsletter they routinely offer different % discounts on repair items and accessories throughout the year. I bagged their optional grid extender which isn’t expensive anyway not for my HB but for my original PK and its a perfect fit. The PK offering in my opinion is a leaves a lot to be desired.

Thanks @SonVolt - it’s the cooker, not the cook.
