Heading there with the oldest kid next weekend for sports.  Any recommended BBQ joints (or other places) to eat?  Will probably only get a chance to hit one BBQ place given the schedule.  Staying near NC State campus.  Thanks for any help.

    But there are some excellent restaurants.  Poole’s diner comes to mind.

    The two institutions are 42nd street and The Angus Barn.  Both have been around forever and are as much an experience as anything. 

    Not great BBQ in Raleigh but the Pit would be my choice. 

    Breakfast- traditional would be Big Ed’s Downtown but I like NOFO

    Last couple of times I have been less than satisfied. Atmosphere is still pretty cool but food so so.

    If the Q is anything like we have around West Jefferson or Lexington NC it's not anything I like!
    Bar-B-Q Center of Lexington is one of the best I have found in NC, can't help in the Raleigh area.

    Don't know much about Raleigh's BBQ situation but if in Durham hit Picnic and if in Pinehurst the Pinehurst Brewing Company!  Both are excellent!!!!

    I would stop in and you could take us to your Fav Q joint but we are currently in Hiawassee at the Home of The Georgia Mountain Eggfest and the route to Okeechobee is not via SC. We have never had any SC Q so will put it on the list, perhaps when we head back north for the summer.
    Oh and nothing wrong with a mustard base sauce.

    If you are staying near campus, even if not, I highly recommend The Player’s Retreat or PR. Great dive bar with fantastic burgers. They have a little bit of an elevated menu on the weekends for dinner. They have a ton of scotch. Real eclectic crowd, from college kids, town drunks, to Raleigh politicos.

    In retrospect, Coopers sides are nothing to write home about, but this is where I got my first taste of pulled pork with a vinegar based sauce, and loved, Loved, LOVED it, so I will stay loyal to that spot (though, I am sure in the intervening 17 years or so better spots have opened). I was so focused on the swine, that I had to learn to smoke a brisket when I moved back to Texas, having done St Louis ribs, pulled pork and odder things on my BGE in Chicago. Again, probably not the best spot, but I do recall good pulled pork.

    Coopers had to move a couple years ago, but are not far from the original place.

    I hate to say it, but City Barbecue (out of Ohio :o) actually has some pretty good BBQ.
