XL BGE - Lower Grate Question
I have an XL and I want to know:
For an even more direct sear on a steak, what do I need to have to get closer to my charcoal? The standard grill grate sits up kind of high. The EGGspander advertises a lower grill grate for a "cowboy style" cook, but I want to do that without having to buy an EGGspander. Any suggestions?

No need for a lower cooking surface, just toss your steaks on the coals to finish them off. I think @bgebrent posted some r.s. caveman steaks the other day.

Woo from CGS with some kind of a grate will get you down low where you can be right above the coals. Caveman works well as mentioned, but isn’t always practical.

+1 on caveman.
I typically fan the coals lightly to remove any accumulated ash. And you want nice hot, cherry red lump for this.
Another option, if you don't want to caveman it, is to get a small cast iron grate and just lay it on the lump. This will give you a buffer from the lump, but still give you a sear.

What @ColtsFan said if you don't want to lay them directly on the coals.
I have used these grates for that and to stretch over an open fire. They are cheap and can come apart if you need separate pieces rather than one long piece:

You could also go with the spider from CGS.

In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -

Spider from CGS then a set of smaller diameter GrillGrates that sit down inside the fire ring.
