60# of butts to cook
Guys, I’ve got 60# of butts to cook for my moms church function that feeds senior citizens of the parish. Can I comfortably turbo all 6 at once on my XL? (350° for 6-7 hours)? Probably gonna have to “stack” one on top and roatate it throughout the cook. Either that or try and make em stand up on their ends. Any advice you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

You can do it. Best do to them on 2 different levels though and rotate every 2-3 hours.

Doable. Might take a little longer as when you put them on it will take awhile to overcome the heat sink of all that meat. You need a 2” deep drip pan, raised. 3 on top and 3 on bottom. Start earlier and FTC. Rotate or not, they’ll finish at different times. You got this. Have fun.

Why the need to air gap the drip pan? Also, no time to get a second grid on a riser, gonna have to do it without. Thanks for the advice and the confidence in my abilities.

@ColbyLang the air-gapped drip pan is used to keep the rendered fat from burning. There will be plenty of rendering with that volume of pork.

Mission accomplished! Started them at 6 am. Saw about a 250° drop in egg temp with all that meat put on at once. That took close to an hour to recover back up to 350°. Once it was back to temp, she rolled steady till around 1:30. 4 of the butts cooked quicker and were ready to come off. The other two went another 30-40 minutes. Let em cool, then shredded them. Ended up with almost 6 gallons of meat in the fridge. Function isn’t until Wednesday lunch.

Go big or go home. Way to deliver the goods. Hope you had some help shredding all that. Congrats on the cook.

Thanks! I was nervous. Definitely had me watching the temps more than I’m used to doing. No help shredding. The dog sat there and drooled watching me!
