No cooler other options for FTC

I have a pork butt that might be ready in an hour. I don't feel like shredding tonight. I don't have a cooler. Any suggestions on how to keep warm for shredding in the morning?

Use your oven. Wrap in foil and then a few towels. Maybe preheat the oven to 250 and then stick the lot in and shut everything off.

It’s certainly not the norm. With that said, the outside will probe tender before the inside. See how the probe feels at the “center” of the meat at the thickest part.
Example- If the butt is 8 inches thick, see how the probe feels between 3-4 inches in.
With that said, I don’t probe butts. I like to twist the bone and see if it pulls free. If it does, then it’s done. If it’s boneless, I simply temp them.
Just a passing thought, any chance that your thermometer is off that is reading 185? I have seen a few butts that pulled fine around 195, but never seen one that would pull at 185.

@SGH let the meat temp reach 195  probe was gliding through the meat almost to the bottom.  Turbo butt at 400 cook time 5 hours. Went to the store and picked up a cooler. So the now that the pork will be FTC I  assume all the bark will be somewhat wasted?

The bark will be perfectly fine. Resting wrapped does not hurt the bark. This was rested in a cooler for about 10 hours.

The butt was too hot to attempt to pull the bone. Might be time to buy a pair of gloves.

I'm hoping to rest for about 11 hours.

Double wrapped in kirkland foil double wrapped in towels and placed in a yeti roadie 20 cooler.

Wow wow wow. FTC in the Yeti for 11 hours could have went longer if needed.

    Im now an FTC believer.

Pork was still warm while pulling. Any suggestions on a more cost effective cooler?

Coleman Extreme. They are cheap and work like a charm.

  • The Walmart brand Ozark Trail coolers get good reviews. They are very inexpensive. I have one and it does everything I need it to do.

You sure can brother. Just wrap it well, pack it well with towels/cloth and let it go. I hold stuff for 14 hours on a regular basis. I have went over 20 before. It’s like anything else, it’s all in taking the time to properly wrap and pack it.

I took a short cut and cheated. I really have a lot going on and am real pressed for time so I just whipped up a box brine.
With that said, I have used this brine before and it’s about as good as anything that you can make yourself. Plus it’s convenient.

I would not have thought you would get 11 hours even with the Yeti karma.  That said, el cheapo coolers will get you several hours if prepped.  Pre-heat with hot water and you can also load with heated up fire bricks in addition to all the above steps.
    That's quite a way to justify a Yeti-but whatever works.  =)
BTW- great looking outcome right there.  Congrats.

Grizzly Coolers are great and they are made in the USA! I own multiple yeti’s and Grizzly’s and I cannot tell the difference when we go out on trips.
    3- BGE’s  2(Large) 1(Mini Max)

One other thing I've been doing for all my FTC waits is to fill the cooler with hot water, in the bathtub* (so it fills quick), let it set for ten minutes or so, then pour the water down the drain.  Warms up the inside of the cooler nicely, so the butt doesn't have to.

*don't do this while What's-Her-Name is taking a shower.  Trust me on this.
