Just wondering if the magnet in the Pro ( albeit small ) somewhat negates the field from the induction stove and that's why the Pro works....i imagine internally the MK and Pro technologically are similar

Stainless is non-magnetic, to what is it sticking?

I have three of the older Thermopens, all some years old, the oldest maybe ten years. Two of them spent time in my camping gear. All work perfectly. I don't understand the need for a rotating display. I don't hold them upside down. As for the backlight, I can understand some people's need for this, but I don't cook in the dark. (Physical darkness, mental is a different matter entirely!)

Not all stainless is non-magnetic. I think it has to do with the nickel content.

I almost always cook after dark, especially when we're on standard time.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Some stainless steels are magnetic. The tabletop must be made from one of those types (304?).

  • The original T-pen is a tank, still going after maybe 8 years - same battery. 6 years ago I misplaced it for about three months and picked up a MK2 (in about 2012?) it died and just quit working, would not turn on. Once on it worked fine, but was a PITA. Not worth the under warranty rebuild IMO, it was recycled.
Picked up the small probe Javelin for the kitchen. It worked so well I picked up the long probe Pro-Duo. Great thermo. The T-pen is still in the back of my BBQ “junk” drawer, should pull it out and see if it still has some life.
So far, Lavatools is as good as the original T-pen and head and shoulders ahead of the later T-pens. I was thinking of picking up a Smoke, but the T-pen experience has pretty much put that on hold.

Interesting. My company makes things from many different stainless steel grades from cheap 18-8 to HQ302, 303, 304, 316, and 400 series. We also use very strong rare earth magnets. None of these are attracted to each other. I know there are some stainless types that are magnetic but I didn't think they were in common use around the house.

A magnet will not stick to 300 series stainless. 300 series has a chromium and nickel blend.(Molybendum is added for additional corrosion resistance on 316 series SS) A magnet will stick to 400 series stainless. 400 series stainless doesn’t have nickel in it (just chromium) and will rust over time.

Years ago, a young hot shot procurement manager thought he could save the company some money by switching to 400 series stainless from 304 without telling anyone. Rust started showing up almost immediately. Remediation cost many millions of dollars.

OK, I did what I should have done to start with and that was to actually look up what the manufacturer says. :)
Both tables (made by Seville Classics) have brushed 443 stainless steel tops. Both are in the elements 24/7/365 and neither of them is showing any rust (not yet anyway).
I thought it might have been 304 after reading this:
"The most popular stainless steel is Type 304, which contains approximately 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel. At room temperature, the thermodynamically stable crystal structure of 304 stainless steel is bcc; nevertheless, the alloy's nickel concentration, as well as the small amounts of manganese (about 1 percent), carbon (less than 0.08 percent) and nitrogen (about 0.06 percent), maintains an fcc structure and therefore the alloy is nonmagnetic. If the alloy is mechanically deformed, i.e. bent, at room temperature, it will partially transform to the ferritic phase and will be partly magnetic, or ferromagnetic, as it is more precisely termed."
Thought was that perhaps during the forming of the bullnose edges that at least the areas near that may have become magnetic. Guessed wrong tho.

I've had 3 out of 5 Thermoworks product not last a single year under light use.  They've been great on replacing items, but even the replacements have died. My Thermapen is still going strong tho... most of my issues have been with Timesticks and ThermoPops.

I have gone through about 6 of these DOT things. Never any weather exposure, they just die. I like the big display and simplicity but I’m done now.lol

FWIW here is the thread with a discount code. It is 15% off and looks like it still works.

I agree with Cen-tex...I like it better than my thermapen. I originally bought the javelin to use as a backup/travel thermometer, but it has become my go-to and the thermapen is the backup. It is just as fast an accurate, but it is lighter, easier to read, and turns on much faster. My TP has always been a little wonky to turn on when opening and sometimes I have to close it and open it to get it to wake up.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

  • Not to throw a fly in the ointment because i'm still gonna buy them. But lavatools just jacked their prices up by $10 for the javelin pro duo.

I see a $3 increase. I think they've been $50 for some time. Looks like there about $50 across the board when looking online. Except for Massdrop when they carry them.

Oh ok. I did notice they added the new ones that the lavatools guy previewed to us on here back in summer. Looks like they are pretty cool. About $32 each

If it were $5.99 right now, I would pass and buy a Javelin Pro Duo.

If Lavatools had Thermopen's customer service they'd be my hands down choice.  The javelin pros  rarely have issues,  but when they do its very difficult to get in touch with them.   No phone # on their website and emails take over a month to get a response back.   When I did get a response they did offer a free replacement,  but it took 3 emails over several weeks to get them to respond.

I had one of their original Javelin models (when they were still called Thermowands) go on the fritz after about a year of usage. I replaced the battery just in case but still no joy. Sent them an email and got a reply a couple days later suggesting a couple of things to try. Tried them (one of which was to change the battery which I had already tried). Still no joy. Told them none of that worked and they emailed me a return label a couple days later to send the dead one back. Sent it back and I received a replacement about two weeks later.
