My fridge is about 20 years old and starting to act up. Anyone have a good suggestion on what brands are quality out there? Seems like all reviews we are seeing are highly positive or highly negative on the same brands/models.

LG is fairly well regarded. Samsung is very hot-or-miss. We’ve got a whirlpool that we’ve been very pleased withDFW - 1 LGBE & Happy to Adopt More...

Fridges are simple machines that work for years with no problems. What fails are the sh1t quality / flimsy plastics used for drawers and door shelves. I go on how durable the plastic stuff seems, plus the door hinges / seals etc.

True! And we are walking talking survivors from a possible fire in our kitchen one late night when our GE ice maker caught on fire. Fortunately I had a fire extinguisher close by and was able to put it out!SonVolt said:Ice maker death is inevitable.
After repeated unsuccessful attempts by the GE repairman to replace the unit he gave up and GE brought us a new frig!
It has been fine - but just the same it bugs me to open the door and see how crooked the permanent label was slapped on! Makes me wonder how careful it was assembled!

As did we. We got the whirlpool with the mid level drawers and dual ice makers. In retrospect , we never use the door dispenser although it works fine. The drawer in the freezer with the scoop works great.dstearn said:We just both a Whirlpool French Door. The rep recommended not to go with the ice and water on the outside door.

This was my first fridge with water and ice in the door- twice a month I have to remove the inside ice dispenser and clear blockage ....I have had them out once- tech did an Update to the software , worked better for about a month , same thing---I will call again, I do have the extended warranty, that is my only gripefrazzdaddy said:

I have a LG and very happy with it. Ice maker went after about a year, just turned it off. Would not buy one with it again.Dave

The rep told us that because the icemaker is in the fridge they have all sorts of of issues since the colder air has to be vented in from the freezer. We did have an issues with the ice maker in the freezer the first week. The tech came out and replaced it and no issues since then.lkapigian said:

I've had two of the Samsungs one at work and one at home. Both had that issue. The problem seems to be that the ice door doesn't seal properly allowing the ice in the chute to melt and refreeze therefore jamming the dispenser. I was never able to repair either. Main reason we went with the Whirlpool.lkapigian said:

@ikapigian, My Samsung ice dispenser spent more time in the sink defrosting than it did in the refrigerator. Drove me nuts for two years. It's now my beer fridge.Xl bge ,LG bge, two 4' crusher cone fire pits. Weber Genisis gasser and

We bought this one about six months ago after being screwed by an appliance store that went out of business in between payment and delivery. Don’t get this one. As others have commented about ice makers, the ice maker is in the refridgerater section, so it constantly becomes a solid chunk. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Samsung-28-1-cu-ft-French-Door-Refrigerator-in-Stainless-Steel-RF28K9070SR/206839137?cm_mmc=Shopping|G|Base|D29A|29-13_REFRIGERATION|MULTI|NA&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3ZPguai23gIVmrrACh0uYwJjEAQYAyABEgKIZ_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.dsSlumming it in Aiken, SC.

We've had an LG for about 12 years that has had only minor problems with the ice maker. Also have had a Bosch for about 2 years. It's nice although a door shelf broke (quickly replaced) and the stainless skin seems to be prone to dents.NOLA

Have an LG French Door refer with ice maker and water dispenser in the door. It stopped making as much ice as it originally did sometime in September. I turned off the ice maker and started making it in the bottom freezer section.
Reminded me why I hated doing that as a kid with those aluminum trays and always spilling water on the floor no matter how careful I was putting the trays back in the small, upper freezer section.
So I decided investigate the original issue; took the ice bucket out of the door. Noticed there were two sensors that looked dirty. Cleaned with warm water and a paper towel, dried the sensors, and turned the unit back on. It has been making ice like it originally did, for now.Ubi panis, ibi patria.

Isn’t it the same water only filtered? Just add a filter before your kitchen sink, or after. Either way.dstearn said:

Mom has one too, a 1947 Coldspot (still in use as an overflow fridge in the basement). I believe they were made by GE back then. Bought soon after she and Dad got married. Has never needed repair as far as I know. It has been running continuously since new, except for moves and power outages. Even survived a flooded basement a few years ago.fishlessman said:my late 40's GE still works great

From Sears, for those who don't recognize the brand (long ago changed to Kenmore of course). Looks like this one. An ugly beast, but a beast nonetheless!
Good luck finding any modern appliance that'll last 70+ years! As for the Kenmore brand, I doubt too many folks are going to be buying big ticket items from Sears these days.I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

LG. We went to a store that sells all the brands for regular home kitchens. We asked the store manager which brand of refrigerators gave him the least trouble and fewest complaints.
He told us, "Hands down, no doubt about it, LG."
We bought that one. We have been extremely happy with its performance, and the ice maker rocks. We have both water and ice dispensers in the door with this model.
Based on our experience thus far, we will ge th another LG if we should ever need one."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

We have a Moen hose faucet so a filter would not work. I have used the Brita filter pitchers in the past but they take up space on the fridge. Filling the glass inside the door works best for us.pgprescott said:

I have a 3 yr old Ge French door set the fridge was like $2500 so not cheap and not expensive but it’s garbage. The main fan in the back that circulates air went out just after 2 years so that cost me $110 to fix myself then it was good for awhile then the top of the fridge started getting into the high 40s again so I paid GE to send someone out and they said it was the mother board so I bought one and put it in and that didn’t fix it so I did another GE service call and he said when the mother board was swapped they needed to update the system so he did that but it didn’t fix it. I gave up on that and started storing meat in the garage fridge but then the bottom fan in the deli section of the fridge quit cycling it just ran all the time so everything in that section freezes now and the rest of the fridge stays between 45-50 degrees. I will never buy this crap again. Even the GE guy they sent out mentioned the cheap plastic parts they are using fail a lot.
