@stlcharcoal. We’re close to Trump, at the Westin.  Girls are heading out to shop - on my own for a few hours.

I'm jeleous, I went to Chicago in 2010 for the first time for a trade show and didn't know what to expect as I've never been before. I loved the town and food/drink scene. I brought the wife the following time and been going back every other year since. I missed it this year, but don't think I can wait another 2 years for the next show before I can go back.

I’m thinking I’d like to come back when my wife is not running.  I’m not much of a city person, but I like Chicago, Boston too.

Ya there is a lot to see and do for sure. How would you compare to Boston? I haven't been, but it's on my radar for a future visit

And.... thanks to this site I now know that the marathon will be going on tomorrow when I land there and need to get downtown for a meeting...

Any locals have any good advice?  I need to get to the east side of Michigan Avenue at the river. Any chance this can happen when my flight lands at O’hare at 9:30?

Should I take the train? And walk through the mob dragging a rolling suitcase?  Or can a cab get around the masses?

This might sound insane. But go back around Christmas time. Sure it’s possibly some of the coldest weather I’ve ever felt but man was it awesome with the city decorated and snow falling. Then again this is coming from a guy from Texas where snow to us is 2” on the grass and ice on the road so seeing any kind of snow is like a unicorn to us.

Not directed at me but Chicago is far superior for food and drink but the small city charm of Boston is incredible. I would live in Boston and visit Chicago. Just my opinion. Both great places to spend some expendable cash.
  • Heading up in a couple weeks. Got Hamilton tix. The rest is yet to be planned by Mrs Cookbook who used to live there.

It’s going to be complicated.  The race begins at 7:30, so you can expect streets to be closed to at least 12:30.  Michigan just north of the river is in the first mile, so it will be busier st the start than at finish.  Id take a cab - they should know how to get around.

Chicago seems a lot larger and newer.  Just the scale of things seems immense.  The river and lakefront are beautiful.  In Boston, I love The Common and Boston Garden.  There are plenty of options in Boston, but they seem endless in Chicago.

@Foghorn - I'd take the train. Blue Line from ORD or Orange Line from Midway (change to the Red Line at Roosevelt).

Thanks for the - albeit conflicting - input.

@Cookbook_Chip, you’ll really enjoy Hamilton. We’ve seen it in Chicago and New York. We enjoyed the Chicago show better due to better acoustics making it easy to understand every word. And we actually thought some of the performers were better.

Its the best thing I’ve ever seen on a stage. It’s hard to fathom the level of genius and hard work that went into that show.

One of our favorite places in downtown is the Purple Pig.  If you like charcuterie well worth your time.  https://thepurplepigchicago.com/

Purple Pig is awesome! We go there when we travel to Chicago. That and Lou Malnati's. Also have to get some popcorn from Nuts on Clark. Man I need to go back to Chicago for a visit.
    That menu looks outstanding.
Out of curiosity, what are the prices?

Dear wife finished under 4 hours...she qualified for Boston.
Congrats to your wife! I assume she's doing Boston?

I was at the Boston Marathon in 1982. Yep, I was at the Hopkinton start when the gun went off and I was at the Pru when Alberto Salazar beat Di ck Beardsley by TWO SECONDS!! Winning time was 2:08:52 and I barely got there in time - in my car!! Lousy way to "watch" a race!

    1. Alberto Salazar (23, MA)..............2:08:52
    2. Di ck Beardsley (24, MN)...............2:08:54

Not the closest finish ever, but one of 'em.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Any marathon in under 4 hours is remarkable. Good on her. Boston is fun.

Boston, being point-to-point, is difficult spectating.  My wife has done 6 or 7 Bostons - I’ve only ever seen her once per race - and I think one year she slipped past me without me seeing her.  Contrast with Chicago - we saw her 4 times today...miles 1, 3, 12, and 25.

Today qualifies her for 2020 - 2019 is already closed.

Speaking of memorable Boston Marathons, we were there 2013 - she went through about 20 minutes ahead of the blasts.  We went back in 2014 - it was an awesome celebration.

Thanks to all got the kind words!
