Ordered some upgrades for my med egg and have a couple questions

Got the CGS bug today and ordered a few upgrades for my ~15 year old egg. I’m planning to get an XL egg after the holidays, but reading all the threads and comments about the KAB and Smokeware cap, I couldn’t resist the itch to get them for the med.
My fire grate is cracked in half, so I upgraded to the KAB. I have the old style firebox and fire ring. Has anyone had any fitment issues with this setup?
The DFMT works well, but being in the Houston area, we get small rain showers almost daily, so I decided to try the Smokeware cap. The CGS site mentions that the cap could be a bit loose on the med, since the ID of the cap is 5.5”. I measured the OD of my top vent (chimney?) at 5.25”. I’m wondering if the gasket will make up the gap? I’ve read several posts and couldn’t find anyone really complaining about the cap fittment on the med, so I figured I’d give it a go. I’ve also read a few posts about putting the gasket on the egg vs putting it on the inside of the cap. Can anyone comment on where to put the gasket and why?
Thanks for y’alls input.

Having dealt with this myself, if you put the gasket on the cap, it will affect cleaning it.
I was happier putting it on the egg.John in the Willamette Valley of Oregon -
I have not had issue with fitment of the SW cap on my medium - actually two mediums.
I put the gasket on the eggs - not the cap. When I clean the SW cap, I didn't want to mess with the gasket.
You're gonna kick yourself for not upgrading sooner - great choice.

Thanks. I’ll be putting the gasket on the egg side then.Llano, TX - Med and XL BGE’s

I have a large with a SW cap. I didn't apply the gasket at all. The one that was already on the chimney when I got it worked fine. Don't know if Eggs come with a gasket there or if it was something my dealer had done at some point.Marshall in Beautiful Fruit Cove, FL.

I like the gasket on the egg for cleaning purposes already mentioned. Homebrew equiptment cleaner is great for cleaning them and a little bit of oil makes them look good as new. -
I need to get the rubber adaptor so that I can use the SW on my MMMarshall in Beautiful Fruit Cove, FL.

The chimney on the xxl, xl, l, and med are the same. The smokeware cap will work fine on your medium.

Supposed to rain the next 7 days. The SW cap will be a nice addition.

The primary reason I went with the smokeware cap was so I could cook in the rain. My large came with a gasket for the daisy wheel. It works fine for the smokeware cap. Like others have said, putting it on the cap would be problematic when cleaning. I go back and forth on the kick ash basket. You can definitely reach higher temps easier, but it also seems like I go through too much lump with it.Calhoun, GA - LBGE

Turns out, I had to also order this. Just closing the SW cap did not put the coals out very fast and I noticed a huge gain in my lump consumption. Just doing some burgers or quick steaks didn’t leave much lump for the next cook.

I wondered about that. I ordered my first smokeware cap last night and I added the flat cap as well.

I don't know what the difference is, but I have two of the original smoke ware caps, and the fire goes out quickly for me. I've never felt that I needed the flat cap. I'd recommend trying it without and seeing how it goes before ordering a cap you might not need.

Once you get a nice build up of gunk, your cap will seal better.

I used to just take the whole cap off and put the standard issue green cap on. SW sent me the flat cap after I spoke with them at an eggfest. So now I use it. The flat cap works well.Marshall in Beautiful Fruit Cove, FL.

Any use for SW if cooking under cover?
