MAPP torch and safety goggles.   And avoid polyester clothing.  That sh*t melts quick!

Safety goggles or sunglasses are a must.  The lump pops when you’re putting that much heat on it.  I took a red hot ember to the eyelid once and thought I’d lost an eye.

So yeah, it’s more dangerous.  But it’s worth it.  Trying to light anything in the wind is impossible, but the torch makes it fast and efficient.  Just be safe!
Close the dome. I hold the torch in one hand and close the dome with the other.
Dude.  I can’t believe Ive never thought of that.  Totally going to try that now.

The only thing I worry about is those intake holes on sides of my Bernzomatic. Couldn’t those suck in a spark and take my arm off?

30 seconds in the center of the lump, and it takes off on its own!
Your picture brought back fine memories. It is quite obvious that "cart" has been a custom job welded by you I guess? Then seeing - whatever it is to the right of your picture with the same paint convinced me.

In my case my late Father who was a honest to God blacksmith made many of the metal things I are up using and in fact still do. His paint choice was a dark red color and I swear he must have had a 5 gal bucket of it!

I like a small bottle propane weed torch.  Fast light. Keeps your hands away from popping sparking charcoal.  Lots of fun playing with fire!!

For those that use starter cubes or soaked paper towels, do you leave the Egg open after lighting, or do you immediately close?

I don’t have that model but I just lay it across the gasket and close the dome. (The silver part).  That intake would never be inside the egg

Open until the coals are lit and paper towel residue burnt up.

Liquid oxygen, but only if you’re just grilling. It may get your egg too hot for smoking.

Note - It may also void your warranty

When you light with a torch like the JJ George, do you give it a minute of flame, pull out the torch and close the lid or leave the lid open for 15 minutes while the coals get burnin?

@SaltySam @Theophan I always put the nozzle into the pile  of lump. No sparks. I light mine in flip flops and good shirts for years.

  • I started off use the BGE cubes. I then switched over to an oil soaked paper towel. Then to a heat gun. After that I tried a MAP torch. I am sticking with the torch.

@Powak Nope.  I've been doing it this way for probably 30 years. If you get it right up against a piece of lump it'll snuff out the flame but move it to an air pocket and pull the trigger. Lights right back up.

About how long do you leave that in there?

@Powak I never really timed it but it's probably about a  minute no more than two. With the bottom and top vent wide open I leave the torch in the pile until I  see something glowing red and then  I pull it out. I  then put in the platesetter, grill, remote and then close lid. Then wait for clear smoke.

I've been using a product called "Stokes". It is an all natural product developed by a local teenager. It comes in packs of 12 egg-carton style starters. Rip one off and put it beneath the coals then light it.

  • Before I load new lump into the Egg, I take the smallish lump bits that are leftover from the last cook, dump them into a Weber Chimney, crumple two sheets of newspaper underneath the chimney and light.  Takes maybe 10 minutes to get the chimney rolling, then dump on top of the newly loaded fresh lump and off you go...

i have had two of these torches catch on fire, off into the lake they went. theres plastic and rubber seals in the head.

try this, you can make a batch that lasts a year with a roll and some oil, give it a week in the can for an even soak and it lights right up

I did it! Ordered a JJ George torch this weekend on amazon prime. Should be getting it by Wednesday at least. For those of you that own one of these do you find you can leave the tank attached and it won’t leak?

Yes, you leave the tank attached. As long as you have the valve closed it won't leak

Used the JJ for the first time today. About and minute and a half of torch, put in the plate setter and closed the dome and I was at target temp of 275° in roughly 5-6 minutes. Super impressed. Never going back to the electric hoop.

I need a new lighting method as my electric starter died about 2 weeks ago and the cubes I have are smokey as hell.  I think I am liking the JJ George Grill Torch - the specs say you have 21" reach with it. It looks like they are coming out with a weed torch and the reach on that will be 35".

Those of you that have the grill torch, ever wish you had more reach with it?  It looks like it works well with a table, but my large is in a nest. Since I will be standing right there and holding it, I am thinking of waiting/getting the weed torch and get the extra 14" for  only $5 more.

I do not care about the $5, but I do not want to wish I got the weed torch if the Grill torch is a bit short. I welcome the opinion of those who have it.
