Why no love for the small Egg?

  • I’ve looked at them a hundred times, but I can’t ever envision me owning an egg smaller than my medium. I like the real estate. No replacement for displacement.
That’s why you get a second egg like a large or xl
Yup. I have a medium and XL. Went to go look at the mini max when they first came out. Tried to lift it and quickly realized that it’s not really portable. Bought a medium and never looked back.

My small gets used more than the large but less than the mini.  A lot of times it’s doin protein and the small does the veggies.  My small will go inferno in no time flat.

I like seeing all this love for the small. I plan on getting another egg by year end and it’s between a small and medium. Thanks for all the feedback everyone.

Eggs are akin to razors, no matter which one you have you always want another one.

Did you scoop up the large on CL for $350? It lasted about 12hs.

The smallest egg I would buy would be a medium but honestly if I was buying a medium I might just spring for the large instead

Ok I started out somewhere back in like 2004 at the FL Eggfest in Ocala FL with a large BGE, it was just awesome.  The very next year Same Eggfest in Ocala FL we bought a Medium that we could travel with yepper another great BGE, it was a little slow to come to temp but I adjusted over time. The 3rd year at the Eggfest in Ocala I acquired a Mini and it is an Awesome little mean green grilling machine that I still have and Love. I'm not sure what year it was but we won a small at the Sunshine State Eggfest in Melbourne FL still have it and it lives in our motor home and is another awesome BGE. I have NEVER had any problem getting it to HIGH temps even with the stock fire grate. I now have Kick Ash Baskets in all but the mini. In summery the small is an awesome BGE...……. We won a MM two years ago at the Nature Coast Eggfest in Homosassa Springs FL it won't fit in my motor home hatch that the small fits into, it's just as heavy as the small, holds less lump than the small, has the same size grid as the small, need a table to put the MM on, my small has a nest with wheels and I can roll it around as needed. I would never spend the $$$$ for a MM but ours was in a way free, it lives on the Deck of our summer home in NC sitting in a spare LG nest I have out of the rain and gets a lot of use on rainy days. Oh LOVE our Small BGE...………………………….

I have 2 eggs, a med and a mini. Being single I use the mini more than the med.

It's down to the lump useage. MM super economical to use for small cooks compared to the XL, my lump consumption is way down since getting the MM.

Although Small has same cooking grid size as MMX, its lump grate is much smaller, imo that could be a reason for the slow-to-heat-up issue some eggers complain of.  I also found the air gap around the platesetter too narrow.
Perhaps you have hit upon the mystery. I use my Small with a KAB and I do shake the ash free before every cook. As we know a hot temp needs air and fuel (lump). And lastly I have yet to buy a PS for my small.
    Ron,
Are you still using the grate with KAB?

No, and I never have. It has been just the KAB in my small and large since I bought them.

XL and MMax, bought the MMax for travel and camping, use it all the time with My Beautiful Wife and I.
The XL is for large cooks and dinner parties, and they both compliment favorably one another.
Most folks with the small BGE love them, I would have gotten one, except for travel. Love it and would replace it, should something happen.
At 60, I find it heavy, but I can lift and carry it myself, without much of an issue. If I am doing a two mile or something, yeah I will figure a way to get it there using wheels. But I have enjoyed in some pretty cool places carrying it.

I have a mini, small, and a large. The small is by far the most used. I have the woo, stone, and KAB in the small and large and a woo and stone in the mini.

I love my small. I think they all cook different. I go 75%-25%. 75% the food tasting good and 25% the fun of cooking on the egg. I use my Small Egg the most. I recently bought a MM but haven’t fired it up. The attachment looks like a 22 pound bird. It’s a 7 pound chicken on the Mini. It’s fun trying new things. The small takes a little longer firing it up to a high temperature but I have no where to go. But the small is my go to egg.

I have a mini, a spare mini, a small, a medium, and a couple larges. I had a MM, but the grill was so close to the coals, even with a raised grid, didn't like that about it. Lately the medium has been getting all my attention (cooking for one), probably because it's my latest acquisition.

But thanks to this thread, Imma take the cover off the small and show it some love!

I can carry my Small like a duffel bag and my wife and I can handle our Medium  with ease!

From the pic, do you not have any straps that cross under the bottom?  Reason I ask, it looks like the full weight will be supported by the bottom band.  When I brought my first, Large home in the back of the truck (assembled) my neighbor and I picked it up by the handle/hinge (ie the bottom band) and the lower bowl dropped!  Fortunately it was mostly still over the tailgate and didn't drop to the driveway, would've been an unhappy camper had that happened.  Just FYSA.

With a pot lifter properly set there would be no weight supported by the band of the Egg it would all be borne by the pot lifter strap.
