That's awesome. I saw him perform live back in the early 2000s as a metal band. I went as a joke, but it turned out to be a fun show.

Why? I remember this same "uproar" when IE came out and killed NetScape. Does anyone really care now? Nope.

Ask Queen how they feel about Vanilla Ice. Dude made millions of dollars and all he did was add 1 note to a song. Claimed it as his own.

Not the best metaphor, but sure why not - I'll roll with that (in my 5.0). The surviving members of Queen are essentially British royalty and living a very posh life in Europe somewhere.  Vanilla Ice was struggling to stay relevant on VH1's Surreal Life over a decade ago... by this point he's probably a waiting tables at Denny's. I'd say it all worked itself out.

The guy is a multi-millionaire real estate developer now. That doesn't happen if he didn't rip someone off. As has been stated while competition is good, blatantly ripping someone off is no bueno. If BGE truly intended to rip off CGS, they will unfortunately probably win that battle because they have the $$$ to. This is one of the dark sides of free-market capitalism. If you owned CGS I bet you would be pretty pissed right now.

I understand what you're getting at... but how can you say you aren't cool with  stealing another company's ideas and then turn around and say "Red is looking better each day"?  KJ is essentially and total rip-off of the BGE...
Was referencing some of their new things like gaskets, closures, springs, etc.  Respectively they're all a ripoff from ancient China with much evolution to what they are now.
However, you do have a point.
I'm not necessarily hating on BGE.  But, I do have an issue if it was lifted from a small business like CGS. BGE & KJ have always had somewhat of a feud.  I own two BGEs and really have no interest in getting another kamado cooker regardless of brand. I'd be more apt to get a WFO.

Only the bass riff was lifted and was credited later. Other than that, Ice Ice Baby and Under Pressure are wildly different songs in every possible way. Think of the bright side -  Ice Ice Baby was the first hip hop song to top the UK charts. So Queen actually had a hand in spreading rap across the globe.

Point taken. If I get another cooker I'm going back to an off-set.

I still say they are trying to knock off KJ.  I know the Daisy was on another post but it seems to me they are more worried about KJ than CGS. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they came out with a "Rutland style" Gasket soon claiming they "perfected it"

@SonVolt Nope, I'm don't hold a business degree. I'm a regular Joe blue collar HVAC/R technician guy.  But, imho most entrepreneurs (& I know many of them) would lean hard that it's not cool to borrow, steal, etc another company's idea or invention.  I'm all for honest market competition.  It's a healthy and fair thing for businesses to have.
It is no different to take somebody's invention and claim it as your own as it is to take someone's photograph of food and claim it as your own. I have only had to deal with this two times thus far. I know of several other people that have had this occur to as well. I believe @Griffin & @Dyal_SC may have had their photos lifted as well.
    Stealing is stealing.

KJ just copied the same design that BGE copied so does that make KJ a ripoff of a ripoff?

It's rip offs all the way down. Honest question, I know Kamados existed in Japan but I really don't know my Kamado history enough to know if BGE is an actual rip off or just a version of. Was there a Kamado on the market in the US that resembled the BGE before 1974?

I remember when Honda and some other motorcycles didn't come with fairings.. people bought Vetter, Wixom and others, then all of a sudden, the Gold Wing appeared and a few years later, Honda added their own fairing.  Not many (any?) aftermarket fairings now.  Did Honda make a deal with Craig Vetter? I don't know - but that's business.  BTW, I bought Woo and adjustable rig from Tom for my new XL.  Happens a lot - takes money to fight it.

Smokeware, CGS, Kick Ash, have all stepped in to fill a complete lack of R&D from BGE.  These companies have provided great service and a great products.  They have helped BGE become the niche brand it is today.

The classy move would have been to make a deal with these companies and sell bundles.  We on the forum are a drop in the bucket though, so it doesn't matter that we know how shady this is.

A lot of companies have a devoted following for products and encourage aftermarket brands to provide accessories so that users can customise their purchase. They even work with these suppliers pre new product launch so the stuff is available from day one. They appreciate that people want to put their stamp on the product and that this encourages brand loyalty and makes the fan base more devoted and more likely to recommend their product.

The smart move would have been to partner with approved accessory manufacturers and to encourage their innovation under the semi official banner. The fan boys get to modify their product with cool new stuff and promote the brand and the brand gets to learn from said accessory manufacturers and improve their product.

Went to a local dealer today to see if these were in stock.  Not cause I want one, just curious.  No joy.  Its also not clear from BGE's site if they have setups for different sizes.

For the record, I have a Woo and AR combo for my new-ish XL, which I like a lot.

The one feature I kind of like in the BGE knockoff is the ability to use the lower piece to remove the platesetter.

  • Maybe BGE didn't know about Tom, and some intern submitted it as her idea?

Btw, plan to keep buying from Tom.

Patronage is earned. Stealing intellectual property and stamping your logo & calling it a  different name is still dirty.  Red is looking better each day especially when it comes to innovation.  They also apparently listen to their customer base and apply that in R&D.

That's not how capitalism works. Does "Tom" have a patent on his products? If so he's got nothing to worry about.
His name is really Tom so no need to put it in quotes (edited). Very Odd. He does have patents and he does have something to worry about. Ask the guys that started the original bge forum...

I think it stinks.  Will buy from Tom if the need “want” arises.  A higher road could’ve been taken.

BGE probably made a conscious decision based on the assumption that they’d make much more money making their own then they’d have to spend in a potential lawsuit with ceramic grill store

Thanks to this forum I have some things in my cart ready to order from CGS when I get back from vacation.  Had I not become active on here recently I probably would have bought the knock offs.
