Ancho-achiote for mickeys rub!!
what are you guys paying for ancho? I picked up a 1.62 oz bottle this morning at H-E-B in south Texas for $4.94. Then I picked up a 2oz bag at a small Mexican market for $1.79. Quite a difference. What are you guys paying?

Achiote I s ground Annato seeds but save it for Mexican dishes. Don’t touch it with your bare hand as it will stain it read.

Ancho chile powder is a ground up dried poblano pepper if I'm not mistaken.
Achiote is a seed from a bush that people in Mexico used to use to color bricks.

Use them both together, good flavor and good color.

Mickey pays $5.99/lb for ancho powder in the HEB bulk section. Or did about a year ago.
I have a jar of achiote, but I don't remember why, nor what it cost. An ingredient in Sazon, maybe?I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Those aren't the same thing. Ancho is chile, Achiote is just a coloring, it's used in concrete an such. As for Ancho, I paid $13.49 for a pound, which filled almost three pint jars, from Amazon. Shipping included.LBGE, PSWOO, 36" Blackstone, MasterBuilt smoke box- Playing with fire in Three Rivers, MI

Our Mexican grocery store sells it semi-bulk (prepackaged 8oz bags) for something like $4.29.

I previously used the El Yucateco achiote paste which has the achiote plus other spices (possibly including ancho chile?). Don't remember the price at the Mexican market but it was pretty cheap.XL BGE, CGS AR & spider, 36" SS Blackstone, SMOBOT - Flower Mound, TX

I have an achiote chicken marinade on here. Give that a try if you want to use it for something. Also the key flavor in tacos al pastor and cochinita pibil. I had a Pretty funny post on that on here a while back but it think it’s gone.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX -
@The Cen-Tex Smoker I’m search that right now thanks

ISTR that turmeric is a good sub for achiote. Read that somewhere, not sure.

That "small Mexican market" should have also had dried Ancho Chile pods (as well as other chiles). Cut stem and deseed the pods and hydrate with near boiling water. Food process the pods to make and excellent PASTE!! Works great!
