Can’t do it Matt. The Doobie Brothers were one of the best and I can’t get past MM taking them down. It just ain’t right. Give him a Holiday platform is like putting ketchup on a hush puppy.tarheelmatt said:Cool the jets bro. Get you another pumpkin spice latte and chill.
Why would anyone EVER put ketchup on a hushpuppy? -
I like to dip mine in tar-tar sauce.

I’m a fan of spicy ketchup

I seemed to recall that they ask MM to join after Johnston suffered multiple health issues and couldn't continue.

Time to set the record straight as to exactly what went down here:

As much as he sucks, I was at least gonna compliment him on the ESPN or DirecTV "Sailing" commercial showing the guy pushing his boat off the dock after his wife tells him the in laws are coming over to go on the boat on Sunday. That's one of favorite recent commercials. One quick google search later, and I learn it's a different, but equally sucky singer.

True....but you can loook at it one of two ways. (TJ) screwed it up by not taking care of himself (something he didn’t do)....or MM screwed it up with what he did do. I chose the latter!onedbguru said:I seemed to recall that they ask MM to join after Johnston suffered multiple health issues and couldn't continue.

The Doobie Brothers were two very distinctive bands (BMM and AMM
) and both were excellent!
It was my understanding that MM was invited to join the Doobies by their newest guitarist, the incredible Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (both came from a previous band, the best band there ever was (RIP, WB)). They became more pop, but it was DAMN GOOD pop, and not at all easy to play (I worked on the 12/8 keyboard intro to Minute by Minute for a month before throwing in the towel, as a bar musician). MM had a distinctive voice, with one annoying tic: holding a long note, then ending it one whole-note higher (similar to Metallica's lead singer holding a long note, then ending with a different syllable):
McDonald: "Such a long way to goooooo-OO"
Hetfield: "Off to never-never laaaaaaand-YAH!"
MM was also a very precise singer; check out the perfectly in-sync vibrato in the background vocals he did for the best band there ever was (this was before the advent of computer-based recording):

(I'd forgotten that Jeff Porcaro also played on that track. wow)
@northGAcock , if it makes you feel any better, MM is out and Tom Johnston is back in the band, and like Jefferson Airplane/Starship/Wheelchair, they're currently touring, so enjoy!

This is, in my opinion (and it should be yours
) the best track the Doobies ever recorded. It features both lead guitarists, playing in their respective styles and at the top of their game; Skunk starts out in his playful, quirky and totally amazing style, right about 1:58, very tasty! Later, the band kicks into rock groove, and Tom's solo at 3:25 just burns! (there's a helluva vibraphone solo in between, need to look up who did that).

This track just slays me; so seductive in the intro, launches into several different feels and vibes, and ends with some great syncopation. For two glorious albums, Takin' it to the streets and Livin' on the Fault Line, the Doobies had Tommy Johnston, MM, AND Skunk Baxter all on-board; the Jazz-rock-pop music they produced (with some folk/fingerpicking by Pat Simmons) is the kind of music that turns me on."Dumplings are just noodles that have already eaten" - Jon Kung

Botch....been following them for years....and will still catch them if in the area. Caught them this past summer in fact. When Tom returned...it was the Doobie Brothers once again. Love me some Doobie Bros!Botch said:The Doobie Brothers were two very distinctive bands (BMM and AMM

When I was in college I worked a landscaping job to pay for mind altering substances, food and women....usually in that order of importance. The only cassette I had for my Walkman was The Best of The Doobie Brothers. Bet I've listened to it, start to finish, 730 times.

I had a 90-minute cassette with Doobies GH on one side, Boston's first album on the other. That was always in the car the first warm days of spring, with the windows open. Good Times.GATraveller said:When I was in college I worked a landscaping job to pay for mind altering substances, food and women....usually in that order of importance.
