Daisy Wheel Question

BGE calls it the "Dual Function Metal Top." What are the two functions? Temperature control and....?
I use a Smokeware Cap, but a friend and I were discussing some Egg things last night as he considers purchasing one. I mentioned that it comes with the Daisy Wheel instead of the cap, AKA the DFMT and he asked. I was stumped. Is BGE pulling a fast one on us, making us think the daisy wheel is twice as useful as it actually is?
*the last line is a joke, but seriously I've never thought about the official name for it up until now.

It's either because it has two ways to open it (the petals or wide open) or that you can both control temp and snuff the fire with it.
I have a smokeware too.

The "dual function" come from its ability to drastically set temps with the large adjustable cover or precision tune with the petals.

It's more dual "actuation" or "movement" maybe?? The early ones only had a daisy wheel on them for low and slow. Then they came out with a second top that had the slider on it which gave you better control for 350-400+. So they combined the two, and voila, "dual function metal top". I can't remember if that was originally their terminology, or something that originated on the old eggheadforum.
Based off the pics we've seen here and the graphic in the new assembly instructions, looks like it may be going back to the single function slider though.

Here's straight from the BGE web site:
"Dual Function Metal TopReplacement Dual Function Metal Top for all EGG sizes.
The multi-variable daisy wheel design allows for precise temperature control – rotate the larger opening for higher or lower temperatures, and simply adjust the smaller openings to fine-tune the cooking temperature as desired. For best results, open fully when lighting the EGG.

hey brother vcool, the daisy wheel IS actually very functional, myself .. I never jumped on the Smokeware bandwagon, the DW works just fine - for me at least .. the meat i smoke on my egg has no idea I'm using an inferior product, lolvcool said:BGE calls it the "Dual Function Metal Top." Don't get me wrong, I used one for a few years before I got the shiny cap as a gift. I know the daisy wheel is super functional, and I wouldn't say inferior, just different.SoCalTim said:

My question was what the second function was besides temperature control. I take it from the replies above that the two functions seem to be the ability to dial the petals, as well as rotate the larger opening.

I think they needed a new name when they modified the design. The older style is what I call the SFMT since it had a single temp control. The newer style has dual controls. Maybe they were thinking of low temp and high temp controls as separate functions, thus dual function.

I wouldn't say inferior
I'll say it - it's inferior. If for no other reason than it's rain protection and it won't rust.
I also prefer the way the Smokeware Cap looks, and how it functions.
A thought for new eggs - when you buy an egg, sell the new snuffer cap and daisy wheel before you use it on ebay. You'll get about double the cost of a Smokeware cap.

For me, it's that I can leave it open to vent the BGE's I don't use very much. Otherwise, the DFMT lets rain in. Cuts down on the mold.blasting said:I wouldn't say inferior

I love the daisy wheel, it does exactly what it's supposed to do. I provides really good temp control. I know it's just my opinion, but I wouldn't trade the daisy wheel for a free Smokeware cap, but then again my egg sits in a covered area and I don't need any water resistance.
-
I love my daisy wheels so. So much I can't bear to let them sit on the hot smokey egg and oxidize and get creosote and pig fat all over their sexy metal sides.
I just wish the hole was bigger.

Don't fall into the rocket science of BGE. Some folks like to promote BGE as rocket science.
The daisy wheel works fine for controlling the temp.

In my mind its pretty simple. If you cook under a roof, daisy wheel is fine. Out in the open, get the smokeware. The “dual” part is because it slides open AND rotates to adjust the petals.

The daisy wheel is meant to be used above 300 degrees?

I had a bunch of rain during a long pork butt cook recently, which made me think about the Smokeware cap.
It seems like it would work great for cooks under 350-400. But from the pictures, the opening looks pretty small to me when fully opened, compared to the daisy wheel when all the way open. Does this cause issues for high temp cooks or the searing part of a reverse sear?
For really high cooks it’s easy to remove the daisy even if it’s realy hot, is the Smokeware cap also easy to remove mid-cook?
I’ve never seen one in person so it’s hard to judge how much max airflow it allows. -
I have no issue with the daisy wheel other than losing my settings when I open the dome. That's another advantage to the smokeware. I use both but most of the time the top is off unless I'm doing <350*~ John - Formerly known as ColtsFan - https://www.instagram.com/hoosier_egger

Keep the screw on the daisy wheel facing towards the front of the egg. That should help you from losing your vent settings when you open up the domeColtsFan said:I have no issue with the daisy wheel other than losing my settings when I open the dome. I was cooking in the rain once with the daisy wheel. I put a little piece of tin foil over it, tucked it in under the lip on each side and let it stick up a bit above the openings.
Now I'm so embarrassed that I went with the 10 cent solution instead of buying something else for the egg.Mt Elgin Ontario - just a Large. -
Realize there are three openings of that size on the Smokeware cap, not just the one "opening" you mentioned. The cap is easy to remove mid-cook but you will need to protect your hands, it gets quite hot to the touch.UNCHeels08 said:I had a bunch of rain during a long pork butt cook recently, which made me think about the Smokeware cap.

Although I have the cap (and regrettably started this now derailed discussion), I never really saw rain as a big concern when egging. The openings in the DFMT are small enough not much rain would get in, or if they are bigger then the heat of the exhaust should deal with the rain. Although I'm sure there could be enough rain that it would get in the egg, I suspect I would tap out before the egg would.
