Neat story that I came across. Not sure if most know, but Texas Pete isn't made/from Texas.

Winston-Salem's finest and the only one to go into true Eastern Mop.

I like Texas Pete as much as the next guy but Winston Salem's finest is Krispy Kreme.Eggcelsior said:Winston-Salem's finest and the only one to go into true Eastern Mop.

Pretty neat process at T.W Garner. I helped engineer and install their hot sauce batching PLC equipment around 2005.Eggcelsior said:Winston-Salem's finest and the only one to go into true Eastern Mop.
Winston is littered with fine items, but I believe you're correct about Kispy Kreme.DoubleEgger said:

KK is a nostalgia trip for me, growing up in Carolina. The glowing neon is the beacon on the hill. Getting a fresh glazed is still tops. Just melts in your mouth.

I was living in San Diego when they opened the first KK there. A few of our execs were from or had lived in Carolina and so they sent a gaggle of Admins there with a wad of cash to bring back KKs for the whole company (~200 at the time). Exciting time, enough people had had them once when traveling or had heard the hype, so everyone was juiced to get some. Welp, they sent admins that apparently didn't "know" about KK and they came back with boxes and boxes of everything BUT the fresh, warm, glazed. Half the company was crushed and the other half said "I don't get it, they're just donuts"THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

I've never had anything but the glazed. No reason to stray.

The glazed with chocolate is reason enough. Both rock.Sandy Springs & Dawsonville Ga

KK built a huge new free standing store here on a highly visible and expensive corner because the new president of KK at that time was a BU grad here in Peoria. That store was closed in less than a year, about the same time he was fired. The store set vacant for some time and eventually sold for a song. Now it's is some discount eyeglass franchise. I never got there to taste whatever the big draw was all about.

There is a lot of wisdom here. I can't figure out why more doughnut makers don't glaze first and then add chocolate...YEMTrey said:
And like @Eggcelsior, KK is nostalgic for me. My dad and I used to go on weekend mornings because we would wake up before my mom and sister. We would sit at the counter with the policemen and eat them hot off the line - plus a couple of chocolate ones. Then we would take some home for the girls.
So, I have passed this on to my son as a family tradition.XXL BGE, Karebecue, Klose BYC, Chargiller Akorn Kamado, Weber Smokey Mountain, Grand Turbo gasser, Weber Smoky Joe, and the wheelbarrow that my grandfather used to cook steaks from his cattle

Our local mom and pop doughnut joints smoke any chain donut, cheaper to boot. An apple fritter or buttermilk bar or long john cannot be beat.

Most local places do. Just focusing on the nostalgia factor, kinda like your blue hairs.Focker said:Our local mom and pop doughnut joints smoke any chain donut, cheaper to boot. An apple fritter or buttermilk bar or long john cannot be beat.

Same here. Their donuts doesn't appear to be the same as they once where, before they went nationally.Foghorn said:

I'm the same about nostalgic. Anytime we'd go to High Point or Winston, we'd get a dozen or two. Always remember if my mom or dad had a doctors appointment, we could get a treat.
Another fond memory is going to the beach. First day, my mom would go to the store and get some items/groceries, and always bring back donuts. She said the beach always made her hungry and snacky.
At any rate, no need to make a pissing match really, there's plenty of mom and pop places around here too that have great donuts, by KK and their history/memories keep me going back too.------------------------------
