today my little girl wanted to use the grill all by herself, with mom in full panic mode we went out to start the cooking process.  We setup for basic chicken cook running 1/2 indirect raised at 350. She wanted to use rockwood, one piece of hickory and one piece of cherry.  She prepped the chicke thighs by cutting off all the extra fat and rubbing it down with her own blend.  She used salt pepper honey powder and a little of the dizzy pig ghost pepper(her favorite).  She seasoned them while the kamado came up to temp.  She set them on the raiser indirect side of the grill until the temp was 155, she then moved them over to the other side to get a little crispy.

I have to tell you guys that I'm so so proud of her. Not because she was able to do it but because my little Norah Grace wanted to cook lunch for her mom and dad.  What a kind hearted child, I know we dont deserve it, she's a true joy and blessing.

That's wonderful to let her do that for you. What a great way to reinforce her desire to do something like that.

@JohnnyTarheel she's certain she's going to win this local comp in may, and has the prize money spent.  She's got a medium in her future, with a woo from @tjv.  I hope we do well but she's a wonderful kid and is going to get a grill in the near future anyway.

@SciAggie it's such a joy having her help us in the kitchen and outside that I couldn't help but let her have a go, under watchful eye, but it was her ballgame today.

Great interaction right there.  And an eggcellent outcome.  Not only the shoes to fill but the challenge of maintaining or growing the interest-Regardless of the future, enjoy today.

  • Awesome thing to do with your daughter. Looks like she has learned well. That looked delicious. Thighs are my favorite part of the chicken.

That's awesome, but my devious mind is trying to figure out how to get this misconstrued to some state agency as "they make their daughter do dangerous things with fire" - so she can become my foster child and cook for me.  :)

She needs to get to an eggfest.

@Foghorn funny you mention an egg fest, we have one on may 20th to cook at.  First place is $600 and I have a feeling she's got a chance to win.

She needed some help today with the lid, it's a little heavy for her but otherwise it was all Norah.

Norah Grace, your chicken looks every bit as good as any I have ever seen on this forum. Congratulations on your first Big Green Egg cook. We're all looking forward to seeing your next one. =)

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

@Carolina Q she says she has Mother's Day meal all planned out. Something about grilled corn a brisket flat and cast-iron potatoes. she's so excited to be cooking "all by herself". I will continue to monitor from a safe distance and provide some tips where I can, but I feel like she made better chicken then I do!!!!!

    Good stuff.
My guy was 8 here, still a little afraid of the heat at 5 hundo, and a couple of years of low and slows.  He refers to my small as "his" grill.
It gets really interesting when you put a scary sharp 9" Shun in his hand.  Have fun with her.  :)

That looks  better than a lot of the chicken I've made. Strong work young egger. The force is strong with this one.

@Ozzie_Isaac I was impressed with her knowledge and intuitiveness.  She gave me her outline and dang if it wasn't spot on.  These were some of the best thighs I've ever had.
