For you folks that mulch, does it have to come up/raked up at the end of the season, or spaded into the ground, or.....?
We've done bark chippings before, but it takes a tipper truck load to cover the beds in our garden. Leave it on and it rots in over 2 - 3 seasons and gives good bulk to the soil as well.

Weeding isn't much of a chore in a small garden.

I use lumber wrap. Comes off the bundles of 2x4 s at the lumber yard. Lay it out flat over the garden and cut holes where you want your plants. Only weeds are in those holes and takes seconds to weed.black side up Also gathers heat into the ground. Which we need here in Montana. I run a drip system with a timer that snaps on for 6 minutes 4 times a day and waters each plant directly at the base. Works like a charm

Planted last Sunday. The heated propagator is doing its job, tomatoes on the Left and chillies on the Right.

I also planted some courgette plants, yellow type. One came up fast, a second did too but was not forming leaves right so I pulled it. Here's the good fast one. This is in just under 6 days now, you can almost see it growing!

I've never had luck with window light, so I built a system of shelves on a basement wall with fluorescent lights over each. Used to worry me about what people thought I was growing... I need to start some tomatoes this weekend.

Noob with a question - my late fall planted garlic fully sprouted (about 6 inches of green growth) during our "first spring" and now we have snow, lows in the teens, etc...  Will it weather the cold or should I just dig it all up when it warms up again?  Thanks all!

As usual my tomatoes are ready to go in the ground two weeks too early. Three types this year. I had sworn to limit it to one type but I received two sample packs of tomato seeds. The Thai Hot chiles will be fine until then.
  • The garlic shoots will be just fine @da87.  Ours do the same thing most every year, with no harm done to the bulb.

I went to Lowes yesterday to get some lump.  It was unusually warm and I was in my shirtsleeves, odd to see the Nursery section still all bare shelves.
I know we're gonna get a couple more snowstorms and they're gonna suck.   :s

Anyone have a suggestion for a simple container garden kit?  Looking to get my daughter involved with the hobby.

@ryantt go to a garden centre, they will tell you what you need and will have racks of seeds that your daughter can choose from.

Earthboxes work very well. The plants can not get burned from too much fertilizer, and the plants only get the exact water needed.

I'm jumping in at the start here. Pictures of our greenhouse (as also requested by @kl8ton on the other thread). Just dug in a load of rotted manure, compost from our household waste and moss peat to bulk up the soil a bit. This will be filled with chilli and tomato plants, which need to be under glass in our cool climate. Seeds into trays indoors next week. Greenhouse is 16' x 8'.

Ever since, "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle", I tend to steer clear of greenhouses.

For someone who doesn't have enough spare time to make a true garden, would this be worth it?

You're ahead of me already, mine aren't that big. They need to go out in the greenhouse, but forecast cold again this week.

I think I will be following this thread. I would like to start a garden this year. Plenty of space in the new back yard. Just no clue what to do, or how to keep the animals out and how do I know when the veg is ready? If it's in the supermarket produce dept I know it's ready.  Would love some herbs, peppers, eggplant tomato etc. not sure I am the right guy for this project. But it would be an adventure.

New addition to the family. Cover crops are dying so that means it's almost time to start planting for this year. Sidekick is supervising.

Start out with tomatoes. No guess works as to when they are ready, and there is nothing like a vine ripened tomato.
