I have a problem with plugging my BBQ into a wall.

    Eggs shouldn't require electricity.

They don't. One's choice of tools is personal......to each, their own.  :)

There's no such thing as cheating unless you're doing a competition and you break the rules.

The goal is perfectly cooked, delicious food.  However you get there, that's between you and whatever flavor of magical omnipotent being that can read your inner thoughts and actually gives a sh*t about them. ;) (wink emoticon as to not offend anyone, makes everything ok).

i don't understand needing to get up in the middle of the night to check the BGE, honestly.

but there was a time that the daisy wheel was considered cheating.  the real tough guys just angled the ceramic cap on the thing and used the lower vent.

personally, i honestly believe i see just as many "my fire went out" posts as i do those that say "my powered draft thingey isn't working".

if you like electronics and stuff, why not. but realize that it isn't a *need*.  the BGE's selling point for me was not needing to monitor it, and i haven't ever had to.  i bought mine before the advent of these electronic controlled fan units though.  back when the BGE was seen as perfectly controllable via the vents (as opposed to other, usually metal, smokers), so i learned that way.  no other option.

some will say they prefer "having peace of mind", but that refers only to their peace of mind.  it implies we don't have peace of mind (those who use the vents alone). but mine is fine.  i think 15+ years and i had one fire go out.  a flameboss (or other) wouldn't have helped it.

doesn't make a person more or less manly though, if that's the question.
Don't you have a multi probe thermometer monitoring system? Hmm? Why?

I got a maverick and used it once or twice, but now I'm too lazy to program and set it up.  I figure the same would happen with a controller.

I find the egg to be pretty much set it and forget it.  I don't care about grid temp and as long as dome holds steady, I don't worry too much about that either, give or take 75 degrees.

Just give me a thermapen, and I'm good.

Its been a while since I did an over nighter, (I wrap every time now) but back when I first started and did over night pork butt smokes I always slept through the night, dome temp would be around 270 before I went to bed, when I wake up I'd check the temp and it'd be 300-310 and thats just fine :-)

buying the thing isn't needed or cheating, maybe use it sometimes and other times don't just on how you're feeling, if you want the badge of honor or if you just want the food :-)

Of course it's cheating!! And I'm totally OK with it

If anyone has a problem with this , they are welcome to come and cook for me while I sit on my a$$ and get to the bottom of a bottle of bourbon.

Are you going out to cut your own wood with a hand saw, cooking meat from an animal you just killed and butchered, over a fire pit in the yard, started by rubbing two sticks together? If not, then isn't that cheating?

We have grills with vents, and lighters and torches, and fire squares, and pre-burned bagged lump, and store bought packaged meat, and temp gauges, and lights to cook at night, and all the other stuff that goes with cooking on the egg.

So what's one more thing to use when cooking? Will it taste the same when it ends up on the plate? Will it make life easier? All the stuff you already use makes cooking easier. Are those things cheating? If they are, then call me a cheater. I like using my Stoker when cooking.

    Your cooking.
All is fair in love and war and egging. Just do what I do, drink and rationalize the situation at hand, cook and enjoy.
Now if you were using a fire controller, and sleeping with someone else's Wife, that might be thought of as cheating, by some of the hard core folks, on this forum. Not me.

Who cares?  If you like it and have the resources to buy, I say go for it.

I've had my egg for 7 years now and enjoyed every minute of it.  But after years of doing 16-18 hour cooks all through the night, having to wake up multiple times to check on/adjust fire, I have started to think about getting a flameboss.  My question that I'm struggling with is:  Isn't there a rite of passage/badge of honor associated with manning the fire and controlling yourself, or should I just get over this and appreciate a good night's rest?  I always give my buddy who has a electric smoker a hard time about how easy that is, but essentially isn't that what I'd be doing?

It is just another tool that I use for low slow cooks especially overnight.  When I purchased my XL a few years ago I purchased the DigiQ with it. Since then I have upgraded to the CyberQ. If the FB was available I would have considered that as well.

  • LPT: using a stoker, or not using a stoker, isn't actually what makes someone a man. Not worrying about what other people think, though, is a step in the right direction

Purists might argue that its cheating to use help...your stress level amd enjoyment of all things bbq the following day after you had a good nights sleep will cause you to wonder why on earth you didnt get a fb or guru setup sooner

I remember the nights where id be up everybt two hours to make sure temp was just right and then i discovered the guru.  Not only do i get rest the night before taking some amazing food to a party, but i actually get to enjoy it as well because i wasnt inhaling soot all night...

And on results ill say this.  A digital temp comtroller keeps your temp steady and precise.  plus on a day cook you get to do other things such as yardwork, watch football, coach your kids, grocery shop et without having to babysit your cooker

  • Not sure why it is assumed that a person needs to get up every two hours and that they can't keep temps steady without one. Or that they are stressed.

Get one if you want one. Just don't assume everyone is stressing or can't hold steady without one.

Really find the 'debate' to be baseless.
