In 2016 I burnt all my arm off 5 times - and here is why...

As the subject says I have removed my left arm hair by fire 5 times in 2016
I was starting to build up a fear, no matter how I tried to burp the egg. I've even resorted to watching YouTube videos but I just can't understand why I couldn't burp the Egg successfully.
I was able to cook pizza easily with no rushes of heat and it burped just fine.
Finally I've understood my problem.
The Egg would be at 500 plus (perfect arm hair removal temperature) and I was making the mistake of closing the vents as I got the to the end of a hot cook. The same way you might turn the gas off on a hob and just let the dish simmer for a few minutes.
Then I'd come to remove the food. My theory is the decreased oxygen from closing the vents combined with the super hot charcoal meant that when the new oxygen (even after burping for 20 seconds plus!) hit the egg the flames came back in the form of a big hot ball of "arm hair hating" fire.
My new year's resolution is to grow my arm hair back and keep it
Here's a picture of my NYE steak that I erm lost my arm hair to...
The steak was delicious, 2 hours in the Sous Vide 125 and then on the Egg with cast iron at 550 to sear it

that's exactly what happened. Shut off the oxygen + burning lump = backdraft.
Just a note - closing the vent and leaving food in the egg ("the dwell") can potentially produce "bad smoke" from a smoldering fire, although a couple of minutes won't make a huge difference.

I'm glad it was just your arm hair. When I read the title to your post, I wondered how you could burn your arm off 5 times. I think most people just have 2 arms. :-)
I used to burn off my arm hair from time to time, but now I make sure to put on my long BBQ gloves before opening the lid. It still flares up if I'm not careful, but it rarely does any damage to me.

The best advice I got was to remove the daisy wheel for anything hotter than smoking temps. I never shut down my vents until the food was off the egg. Then I closed everything off. I lost my arm hair once, and that is enough.

Its like a hazing for egg noobs that everyone must endure. When i first got the egg I remember thinking people were dumb that had it happen cause it never happened to me at first. Then a fiery karma enveloped me one night. Good times.

Mine got me a couple of times at medium Temps. It's like I have to double burp it to keep the flames from shooting out.Aledo, Texas

The arm hair does not scare me as much as losing leg hair from the lower vent. That gets your attention the very first time, and DO NOT ask me how I know."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

Forget leg hair. Try using an egg in a wheelchair. Lower vent is aimed right at your private parts. Thankfully no incidents to date.YukonRon said:The arm hair does not scare me as much as losing leg hair from the lower vent.
