I'm seriously considering making my own dough for pizzas, pasta and bread. Are any off the shelf mixers any good? I don't, hopefully, wont need a restaurant grade mixer. Tried a consumer grade slicer yesterday and that was a BIG fail..

You can get the Kitchenaid "Artisan" on sale for around $300, and the "Classic" for less than that.  I've been using the Artisan for 15 years or so and am very happy with it.
Note: the two top Kitchenaid mixers (they raise the bowl up to the beaters) are quite a bit taller and wouldn't have fit under my cabinets.

If going Kitchenaid get the Professional grade with steel gearing. The lower end Kitchenaid mixers will have plastic gearing. You can also look for older Kitchenaid mixers on Craigslist that were made by Hobart up until the late 80's and early 90's. They eventually sold off to Whirlpool and became weaker and cheaper made

If I'd do it again I'd go with a Bosch mixer.

I restored a few Kitchenaid mixers as gifts for Christmas a few years ago. I don't think I paid more than $50 for any of them on Craigslist

As far as I know the Professional Kitchenaid Mixer has steel gearing.

Wow!  Same thing is only $260 at Amazon:
    https://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-KSM150PSER-Artisan-Tilt-Head-Pouring/dp/B00005UP2P/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1483141291&sr=1-1&keywords=kitchenaid+artisan

WRT steel vs plastic gears, I think mine is old enough that it has the steel gearing, it certainly weighs enough.  Someone on my pizza forum said that, as @WeberWho mentions above, they did go to plastic gearing, but soon lost a lot of good brand recognition and went back to steel some years later.  I don't know if that's true; you may be able to get an idea by visiting your brick-n-mortar and picking up both an Artisan and a Pro/600, or if nothing else write to KA directly and ask them.
You've got my curiosity up, may have to visit the mall tomorrow.

I think the lower end Kitchenaid mixers still have nylon gearing. It's a "safety feature" not to overheat the motor so it will essentially break or strip the gears to save the motor. More less an excuse for the cheaper weaker motors. ;)

  • I have the kitchenaid pro 600 as well. You do not need a mixer to make pizza dough or bread. We still do it all by hand. Much lighter and airier  that way. Just get the book- flour water salt yeast (not sure that's the right order but it's called that in some form) and you will be making great dough in no time

@EggHeadinFlorida Ebay has manufacturer refurbished kitchen aid mixers for 169. Best buy also occasionally puts them on deal of the day for 199. If you don't need it right away you can find a good deal eventually. The refurbished ones on ebay come with a warranty and you can find them in the daily deals section.

Yes, they have steel gears (recently had to re-grease one after 26+ years) Still works great. Got a 7qt one on QVC for < $400 earlier this year.  Just do your homework and you can generally find them reasonably priced.  I would go with a lift model (vs a tilt-head model)  as they are much more durable.
  • What size motor should I be looking for? I see they start out around 250 watts and go up to 500+..... Obviously, the price goes way up as well...

Honestly, look into Bosch. It's better built for dough and heavy work. 800 watts!

  • @botch All STEEL gears in the 600 series..  Seems like a good price for this model.. 575 watt motor and its a "lift bowl" design.

Another vote for the Kitchen Aid pro 600!

There's more to my story and I recommend you pursue sales. I bought mine new back in 2011 at a chain store called KOHL's. Regular price was $499.95 on sale for $449.99. However since they will match internet prices I found one for $339.95 and yes they would match it, but my story doesn't end there - KOHLs also offer a 15% senior discount so that knocked another $51 off! Then they had a promo going and for every $50 you spent they gave a $10 gift certificate so that knocked off another $50 so from $499.95 we got down to $238.95. BUT Kitchen Aid was also having a national promotion and we received a food grinder attachment with a $49.99 retail value for FREE.

Someone here a while back posted a way to get a Pro 600 at Kohl's for super cheap by using multiple discounts.  My brother got a pewter metallic one for $160.

I bought my Pro 600 before this for $220 on amazon in copper pearl.

My Ma got me the pasta roller set, and a Guy Fieri knuckle sandwich knife for my b-day, before she died.  Scratch pasta is in another league with the ease of the rollers and cutters.  Get the 3 piece set.

The meat grinder is handy for smaller batches.

I have learned, they are much more versatile than dough mixers.  My kitchen will never be without one.

Now I will admit the Pro 600 does have a big foot print and it is heavy so I spent some of my savings and had a cabinet door fabricated to match our cabinets so I could use the space formerly housing our trash masher.

and then purchased and installed one of those spring assisted pull up/swing down hinge units so as to lift that beast from down under to lock in at counter height.

Yes as for that meat grinder attachment it sure won't process those deer you keep bringing home, but for the occasional grinding job they work fine!

  • Damn Ron, you robbed them LOL.... That's a good deal.. I have a Kohls locally. Just got off the phone with them, and they wont match internet price. Looks like amazon has the 600 series for $350 ish and the (3) piece pasta rollers for $120 and ravioli maker for $150. This is really really tempting!!!

Drat.  I had carefully curated my intranetz ad viewing to nice camera equipment and women's lingerie, so I always had pleasant things to look at on any forum I visited.  Now its nothing but stupid mixers.
     =)

Still learning a lot from this thread, though.  Thanks @RRP, didn't know Kohl's had that big a discount for seniors; is that "AARP Senior" (age 50), "restaurant Senior" (55), "Social Security Senior" (62), or "2017 republican Senior" (69)?

I have the KitchenAid pasta rollers, use them a couple times a month during the winter (love homemade pasta).  I'm also amazed at how overpriced the two Macey's ads are on this thread, how can they stay in business in this intranetz age??

  • Does anyone have the (3) piece pasta roller/ cutter set from Kitchenaid? Ive got a question if you do.

Agreed on the grinder. Use mine all the time for small jobs and it's great. But anything over 5 lbs at a time seem to heat the motor up quite a bit. Ran 40 lbs through once and it tripped the reset on the motor. But if I want to do 3 or 4 lbs for burgers or something it's more than adequate.

Now on the sausage stuffer attachment I've never been too happy with. Don't have the pasta maker but I think it would be fun to try. Not sure of my model, it doesn't lift the bowl and I would guess it's an intro model (was a gift). But it works for me.

On the "Roller" I see they have 8 settings with 8 being the thinnest and 1 being the thickest.

How thick is the #1 setting?
