Johnny Lang used to play at one of my college hangouts in Fargo back around 1993 to 1995 or so when he was known as Kid Johnny Lang. I think he was 14 years old or so, but if you closed your eyes you would swear he was a grizzled blues guitarist decades older, in playing ability and voice. I wasn't surprised when he got big for a while, but he's throwing his talent into gospel now for some reason.YukonRon said:Joe Bonamassa "Mountain Time".

Billie Gibbons

Danny Gatton's career was one long guitar solo. I'll pick "Canadian Sunset" from The Redneck Jazz Explosion because I love the song. Some tasty pedal steel from Buddy Emmons, too...

My Beautiful Wife and I just saw Johnny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
Gotta tell you, Gospel was not approached that evening.
I remember, years ago, Billy Idol, after a near death experience, decided gospel was the way to go, and that lasted less than a couple of weeks."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

Can't really fault any choices already here, so I'll add a couple that I didn't see mentioned:
Prince is criminally underrated, solo here starts about 4 minutes in:

SRV "Dirty Pool."
Henry Vestine solo during "Fried Hockey Boogie."
Jeff Beck, "Freeway Jam"
Back in time:
Link Wray, "Rumble"
**** Dale "Miserlou"
Les Paul "Sittin' on Top of the World."
Oh, and 4 - 6 notes by Norman Greenbaum.

I listened to this incessantly for about 3 years. Just putting it on right now. On a good stereo in sounds like Stevie is right there in front of you. I really like how he leaves the hum of his amplifier in the recording. The whole tune comes together in a way that would have made Jimi very happy.GrateEggspectations said:SRV on Little Wing. -
To me this whole tune is a solo. Long live the Brit folk artists.

Agreed; the first half of Lindsay Buckingham's solo on Fleetwood Mac's The Chain is also just one note, and it's exactly what's called for. Magnificent!bgebrent said:While Neil young was never a great guitarist, we know he was a great lyricist and songwriter. The one note solo in Cinamon Girl, easy yet brilliant. Made the song. Small world! I watched "the Kid" many times in a smoky blues club in a basement in Grand Forks, same time period. That club was destroyed in the Flood of '96, as was my house, just months after I had sold it (dodged a big bullet there).StillH2OEgger said:

Derek Trucks, Midnight in Harlem (Live).
Kirk Hammett. Unforgiven III.Large Big Green Egg in a nest. North Shore of Boston. -
From the beautiful slow burns of Abraxas, to Ride The Lightning, I love it all.
But there is only "One" that rises, to burn your face upon the green egg dome. The last 150 seconds is purely blisstering.
But Kirk's( aka Zeus of the Thunder Gods) Fade to Black is, without a doubt, right up there. Awesome intro and outro. The outro never ends, and fades with Kirk still hammerin'...brilliant work.
For Whom The Bell Tolls, is our hockey teams entrance song, they loop it...gets the beers and blood flowin' at the QC Mallards "pond".
One solo, or a song that's a solo, doesn't quite tickle the fancy. But an entire album, or multiple albums, that are solo..after solo..after solo? Hell yes!

I still love the riffs in Molly Hatchett's "Flirtin' with Disaster" and Boogie No More----both are epic---since they actually had 2 lead guitars, not sure which one actually played that partLagrange, GA LBGE

Hunter and Wagner. I saw them with Lou on the next tour, the "Sally Can't Dance" tour, they opened the same way, the riffs were evolved some but the same majestic triumph. I remember very little else from the show, it was 1974 after all. Lou mimed shooting up on stage during "Heroin". "Valerie" is a fun song, but a trifle... but check out the solo at the end, it's just so... musical, I guess is the best way to put it.

...and Mark King of Level 42. Mark is in the studio with a "supergroup" (can't remember their name) that includes guitarist Adrian Belew (Zappa, Talking Heads, King Crimson) drummer Stu Copeland (The Police) and a keyboardist whom I don't recognize. Anxious to hear that one when released!

I did not see any votes for Peter Frampton's classic "Do you feel like we do" Definitely on my list (not a pure guitar solo but lots in there, one version is like 22 minutes long). Still gets air time today on classic rock station in our area
