Kick Ash Basket question

I'm thinking about getting a Kick Ash Basket for my large BGE. Am I correct that it replaces the metal grate at the bottom of my egg?

You can use it with or without it. I use the grate with my medium KAB

I use it with my grate. I've never had any air flow issues with my large egg so I see no reason to take it out. I can tell the increase in air with the basket and grate. Any more air flow I'd have to relearn my vent settings. More less personal choice. Combine the KAB with a shop vac and you'll have a clean egg in seconds

  • On my large the basket works great without the grate. Air flow is great without the grate. Makes it easy to clean Egg as well. My temps on the egg in general hold more constant.

  • I have a KAB on my XL...works like a dream. I have the cast iron charcoal grate, still in there. It actually recommends leaving it in there. Air flow is really good.

I believe only a few accessories are need but this is one of them.
  • I was looking at ti on Amazon and the back of the packaging says not to leave it in for "high temperature clean outs" and to put the original grate back in. SO that left me thinking that original grate is replaced by the basket.

    Thanks for confirming.

For Large BGE "Use with or without your lower charcoal grate", see:
    http://www.kickashbasket.com/store/product-detail.php?product_id=1

for XL BGE they recommend to use it with the original fire grate (I emailed their support staff about this question), this is what they said:

"We do recommend using the lower fire grate with the XL. It is just such a large span and also the KAB allows a lot of heat to transfer to the bottom of the XL BGE and that isn't the best because that bottom is the only single layer of ceramic
    in the grill."

These a a MUST, saves so much work. I don't even use the ash pan any more. Shake the ashes over my outdoor fire pit. Every week or two vacuum the big green egg free of ashes with a Shop-Vac Ash vacuum, quick and easy: https://www.shopvac.com/product/shop-vac-ash-dry-vac-catnum:4041200

I use it with the grate, better for lower temps also charcoal burns faster without.

I also have it for the MM and the XL! I use the grate in the XL, but just use the KAB in the MM.

Without grate here.  Well built can handle cooks from 200 to wide open.  Easy clean up and lump prep!

  • I go without grate. I think the clean up is so much easier.
  • Without grate here as well. No real reason - just makes for easier cleaning

  • Do you guys worry about hot coals dropping down into the bottom of the egg and cracking it if you use the KAB without the grate?

Before the KAB came out, some folks were purchasing the High Que and Fishbone stainless steel grates to alleviate any chance of the holes in the OEM grate from plugging during low and slows.  The KAB combines the non-plugging capability of the High Que grates with ease of separating the from the used lump.  BTW ... if you use the OEM grate along with the KAB, you're giving up the non-plugging feature of the KAB.

I've got two of the original "thinner" KABs in my large eggs and don't include the OEM grate.  I've treated them like red-headed stepchildren ... the temp has been up to 600 plus for searing steaks quite a bit.  No problems in 2.5 years of use ... and no sag in the KAB.  If that's the result with the thinner basket, you'll have absolutely no problems with the new thicker baskets.

Not entirely.  The KAB does hold the lump off the grate a bit. The small bits of lump that would get caught in the grate holes are held back by the KAB.  By the time they are small enough to fall through the KAB, they are usually small enough to fall through the grate holes.  Not entirely foolproof, but I don't experience a problem with the grates getting plugged up (occasionally one or two holes, but not like using the grates without the KAB).  I do like the heat protection that the grate provides to the bottom of the egg (especially when using the ceramic fire grate).

@jtcBoynton ... okay, I'll concede your point with the thicker KAB.  With the thinner basket, I'd argue with you.  Cheers.

I'm very confident that if you contact kick ash with any problem with a first gen basket, they will make it right with you.
  • The only time my egg has ever gone out on me was the first time I used the KAB and left the grate in.  Took it out and it's been  phenomenal since.
