  • No grate here in my minimax. KAB is a must in my opinion.

Glad to hear the 'out' responses.  I need to replace my grate again soon so I may just get one of these baskets instead.

Before the KAB came out, some folks were purchasing the High Que and Fishbone stainless steel grates to alleviate any chance of the holes in the OEM grate from plugging during low and slows.  The KAB combines the non-plugging capability of the High Que grates with ease of separating the from the used lump.  BTW ... if you use the OEM grate along with the KAB, you're giving up the non-plugging feature of the KAB.

I've got two of the original "thinner" KABs in my large eggs and don't include the OEM grate.  I've treated them like red-headed stepchildren ... the temp has been up to 600 plus for searing steaks quite a bit.  No problems in 2.5 years of use ... and no sag in the KAB.  If that's the result with the thinner basket, you'll have absolutely no problems with the new thicker baskets.

I'm very confident that if you contact kick ash with any problem with a first gen basket, they will make it right with you.
I had one of the very first ones for the KJ Jr. The design was flawed in a couple ways, mainly the size and placement of the handles which didn't allow the rack for the grate and ceramic plate to sit properly on the fire ring. It was still usable but it made things just a bit wobbly.

KAB quickly realized the error and sent out redesigned new ones that were also made from the heavier gauge steel rod.

    Didn't even have to ask.

    Sold me on the company!

One thing I have noticed though, specifically in regards to the XL, I have been told, and read somewhere, that it is recommended to keep the grate in the BGE XL.
I did not, and after a year of using it in that manner, I got a crack that ran entirely across the bottom, north to south, roughly through the middle. It was a surface area crack. I got the base replaced, but this time, I am running it with the grate.
Do not know if anyone else had this coincidence, or is it a thing?
Leaving the grate in has not created any issues for me, air flow is still excellent, temperature control is seemingly the same.
I have run it through a coupple of hot and very fast cooks and the low and slows, with no issues.
I am not sure if the use with an XL is different, or if we should see the same on all sizes.
As mentioned previously, I have one in the MM, and I am running it without the grate, and it works like a champ, and has done so for over a year with zero issues.

The XL seems to be a different animal ... larger grate with more airflow so that airflow problems seem to be minimized.  In addition, the XL seems to be susceptible to cracks in the base.  I'd probably leave the OEM grate in place on that size.

In my limited time here, it seems like the XL cracks the most. Or maybe it's just reported the most.
