SRF - Arrived but curious...?

Arrived today in a destroyed box with missing dry ice. Gotta love UPS...Is this a new standard for shipping?

  • Dry ice should be gone but they should be frozen solid. Never seen the box messed up like that. Mine were thrown on the porch with the "this side up" arrows pointing straight sideways. Nice to see that pride in your work isnt dead :0/

The "missing" dry ice was probably due to evaporation. Are the briskets solid/mostly solid and not beat up? If so, no harm no foul.

PS - was there that much empty space in the box between the lid and briskets as appears in the photo? If so, no surprise it got crushed - things get thrown around and stacked (sometimes violently) in the back of a delivery truck so if anything heavy landed on it, the box just got crushed.

I never thought of the evaporation, blonde moment.  I only ordered two, therefore there was a lot of empty space, but surprised in the box being opened.  No big deal.

Still rock solid frozen and in the chest freezer.

My SRF Brisket arrived with the Dry Ice Bags evaporated as well but the Brisket was frozen solid.

I run with the standard shipping and it is two days from order processing to delivery.  There have been a few times with dry ice still present but the majority of time the ice is gone but the protein is still rock solid.  I have never had any box or container breech.  Lucky I guess.  But as you note-rock solid and you are golden.  Enjoy the follow-on cook and eats.  And you can expect every bit of 4-5 days for those to thaw in a fridge.  FWIW-

@lousubcap. Thanks for the thaw timing, figured I'd just ask when I was ready to cook, beat me to it!

I order brisket from them probably 6 or 8 times a year. The box is almost always damaged from shipping, and usually left on the front porch with the arrows not pointing up. It is not unusual that about all of the dry ice is gone but the meat is always frozen hard.

I had one delivery in the dead of a midwest winter.  Actually had more dry ice than when they shipped it.

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

  • Mine arrived today with no damage.

How have you guys reused the cooler?

I never would've figured a ground-pounding, dirt-eating grunt would know the difference between evaporation and sublimation.

@jakebge -  I have used them for FTC and road-trips/tail-gates where salvage doesn't matter.  They do a great job and as you have seen are pretty substantial.  I don't burn thru them as fast as I accumulate 'em (a good thing) but they do well for a one day deal.  FWIW-

Looking at threads like these are kind of creepily voyeuristic for me.

@RedSkip - sorry to see the state of your cooler, definitely a bummer.  Also, we get people calling us all the time asking why we didn't put any ice in their box, just empty bags labeled "dry ice" so don't feel bad!

@The Cen-Tex Smoker - it's almost like they intentionally pointed the arrows in opposite directions just to make a point

    @pgprescott - nice!

  • Just a fact of modern life. I get boxes delivered open all the time, both from UPS and USPS. Very rarely anything missing, but it sure grabs your attention when you see it.

@SRFShane I was hoping to play with the dry ice when it came, saw the bags were empty (disappointed) and thought UPS took them.

    Sublimation never crossed my mind.

I put a little foil in the bottom of the cooler and then put my foil wrapped briskets in there along with a couple of beach towels.  Worked pretty good.

The cooler was taking up too much space, so I 'conveniently' left it at a family reunion that I did a few butts for.

Mine arrived today (standard two day shipping).  The box was in perfect shape.  The dry ice was gone but the ribs and steaks (I was too late for brisket) were frozen solid and in perfect shape.  I will order again, but not until there is another sell.

@Hub Try the smaller sizes.  I looked today and it appeared less than 12lb were in stock.

@Redskip -  the small (9-12lb) black grade briskets had been out-of-stock since around April until this past week.  There seems to have been plenty of gold grade in that range and SRF declined my suggestion to downgrade their holdings.  ;)  But I gather that that range is in short supply so if you like that size you may want purchase now-no sales deal in that window.  FWIW-

Mine arrived in perfect shape today, both boxes. :o

Freezers are looking good and stocked now.  Thanks for the suggestions to reuse the styrofoam coolers.  Throwing them out just didn't seem right, and lord knows I have no space to store them.

This is too funny.  We're going to have to write a blog post about this reuse of coolers - I'll be hitting you up to see if I can use your pics!
