Another Char Broil Center Cut Lump Thread

I know, I know. I had to try some. I light with a torch. After the torch has been in one spot for about 5 seconds the lump would always start popping and sparking. With Char Broil I was able to leave the torch in one spot for a long time with no sparking. What really impressed me was that I never had the nasty smoke that you get for a while after lighting. None. The box seems to protect the lump much better during shipping and handling. Much less small pieces than bag lump. Also, the boxes are easier to stack, and since the boxes are completely full, the boxes take up a lot less space in the shed compared to bag lump. Someone said they could not get the egg above 500. I did not try so yet, but if so I will just use other lump. As much as I like it, I would not pay double for it, but the sale price is the same or less than the price of the other lump anyway. For any who may not know the story, Lowes has this lump on sale not that BBQ season is ending.

This really is the best lump I have ever used. I still have a couple hundred pounds of ozark oak in the attic and this stuff is better for sure. It. Runs clean immediately there is no waiting. I just poured half a box on a already hot fire to get ready for pizzas after a cook I just finished and there was zero smoke from the new lump. Gonna pick up 10 plus boxes tomorrow.

@Lit Looks like it's sold by volume and not weight, what is your experience in weight?  Looking to compare to other brands.

  • I have 4 boxes of it. But my dealer gave me a free bag of the BGE lump when I bought the Egg so my first few cooks will be with that.

I like it as well. I have 11unused boxes, Still using the 1st box I bought 3 weeks ago. I will be buying more while they are still discounted. With  a $15 of $50 at Lowes they wind up under $7.50. It burns clean in just a couple of minutes. The box feels 1/2 empty but is full. I can complete a short cook in less time than it takes most other lump to burn clean. The short duration of startup to shutdown is why it takes very little lump.

CharBroil sells by volume and not by weight. They base their product like a soda (volume) versus chips based on weight. I weighed an empty box versus a full one and the difference was 11 pounds. That may vary slightly but I assume an average box contains 11 pounds of lump not including the box.

A member or two did indeed weigh the contents and reported their findings.  A couple of others also reported that Char Broil publishes the content weight of the product as 11 pounds.

Char Broil states the content by weight.  I have not seen them state the contents by volume (not that they don't, I just haven't seen it).

I happen to have some in my car. I looked before I originally asked and just looked again it says 1.18 cubic feet on the box and that's it.

It's 9.89 in my store but there are codes online for lowes that are $15 off $50 so it comes out to like $8 a box. You can buy gift cards from raise.com and it knocks another 5-10% off.

Don't get hung up on this weight vs. volume deal.  A case could be made for either.  All that matters is BTU's in the bag/box.......which ultimately comes from the amount of carbon in the bag/box.

If you sell by weight, you can screw the customer by selling them water (and tell them the other guys are selling the air.)

If you sell by volume, you can screw the customer by selling them air (and them the other guys are selling them water.)

Think about a big pile of leaves.  The BTU and weight do not change when you run them through the shredder.  Lots of air in there, so that would be product you would not want to buy by volume.  Same goes with potato chips......a bag of big tortilla chips would be 3x as more expensive as a can of Pringles for the same weight.  On the contrary, if you've ever bought topsoil, firewood, etc that is definitely a item you do NOT buy by weight as the moisture content can change drastically.

Personally, I think lump charcoal is better represented by weight because of the size/shape variation.  It's not uniform, and therefore is not going to conform to a uniform container.  A briquette is much better suited for sales by volume since the size, shape, moisture content, and BTU rating are all uniform and 100% controllable.

Lump is so unpredictable when it comes to size, shape, BTU, fixed carbon, etc, plus the bulk density changes if you're using different species.  Gotta be careful making claims on the bag with ANY of that when your dealing with an all natural product made in a centuries old process.  When it comes down to it, carbon weighs a certain amount, but volume can vary wildly based on porosity.   So, it all comes down to BTU's in the box/bag.  There should be at least 225K total in our bags per the testing I've had conducted.

I tried a box of this as well because it was all I could get my hands on as I was told bbq season is apparently over??? more like they need more room for Christmas decorations. Anyways I was surprisingly impressed, very little ash and it got rolling fast, noticeably faster than my regular stuff (maple leaf)

Walking in, there it was in the vestibule, 29 boxes, almost $10 each.  Had $45 of change in my truck, decided to up my charcoal game, one Kaddy of lump, one of briqs.  Pretty slick to grab and grill on the go, leave them out on the patio, water tight.  Only $12 each.

Will be burning this stuff in my small soon.  If I like it, I'll be watching this sku like a hawk.

This stuff is fire. The RO fanboys will stroke out when this hits their egg.  Lit super easy with the torch, not even a whisp of junk smoke, tossed on a handful of apple chips on fire, and rolled smoke with the small.   Served these cheddar dogs well.

Will be waiting patiently for these to drop to 5 bucks.  Then, I strike.

Glad to hear others have had positive results. As far I can tell only one person disliked it and his opinion was worthless. I agree that this lump lites easy and is smoke free in just a few minutes; and yes I am a RO fanboy. I already have 11 boxes in the closet (RO stays in the garage) and will buy more in the near future. I've been getting them for about $7.50 a box. I highly doubt you'll see them at $5 but if they get that low I do have another closet to stack them up.

@Focker I haven't done a 10+ hour cook with the CharBroil Lump. I have done 4-5 hour cooks with it on the mini. It was not filled up fully but still had lump left over. Sooner or later I'll do a butt on the small using the CharBroil Lump. I'm not so sure I can load up the Egg with enough BTU's as stlcharcoal talked about for a long cook. Time will tell and I will post about it when it happens. For the quick cooks, nothing beats the Center Cut Charbroil Lump.

    Thanks @mikee

Last time I checked, I am entitled to my own opinions, and my experience with this lump was not very positive.

i will make sure to disregard any and all of your opinions as well, however, based on some of your posts and other threads I have a seen, I imagine I will Be far from the only one that does so.

@tikgriller There is a Huge difference between us. I never mentioned the person who gave the bad review. I could have but that would be in poor taste. My take on a forum is to reply to the topic. If I disagree with someone, I disagree with  what they said. You would be hard pressed to find any thing I said that would be negative on another forum member unless they made at least 3 negative comments about me. You took shots at me and I never fired back. Now you're at it again.

I'll take the high road @mikee since I am new. However, please do take note that even though your opinions of this lump and mine differ greatly based on each of our experiences , I never once referred to your opinion as "worthless". I may think it is silly. I may think it is completely wrong. I may totally and completely disagree with it on every single level, however, not one time did I ever refer to your opinion as worthless. Ones opinion is never worthless. There is a large difference between the two.

As we discussed earlier, this lump may be better  in a smaller BGE, however, it burned much faster than the BGE lump did in my experience at a level that I would not recommend the product nor ever buy it again. If it is something I would never buy again, then why would I recommend it to someone else?  That's just like looking at someone and saying "oh my lord, this tastes awful!!  Here, you try it!"

i dont have anywhere where near the experience in this stuff to know much, however, I bought this lump on YOUR recommendation and I knew enough once I personally used it, to not like it and notice a difference.

Again, My Opinion. Like it, don't like it, but it sure as hell isnt "worthless".

@tikgriller I never mentioned who gave the bad review. I gave my opinion, while mostly positive, but still have some reservations about it. My opinion is what matters the most to me. I heard great thing about another lump. I decided to buy a bag so I could have a first hand opinion. It was good lump but pricey. RO was a better deal than the lump I trialed. I never said that lump was bad; just more than I was willing to pay for.

Can somebody post a pic of the average size of this lump?  RW is great but I have to break up pieces just about every time I load the mini.  Not complaining but if there is something equivalent with less fuss.
