Woo or Adjustable Rig---this choice will make the difference in getting a plate setter or using a pizza stone in my opinion, but you will need one or the other for indirect and rasied cooking styles.  I think the Adjustble Rig is what I would do today instead of the woo, but it is a lot more money.........

I stood there and looked at the AR, Woo and PSWoo for 30 min at the store this week.  Ended up with PSWoo for the shear simplicity of it.

I think I seen you were thinking of getting a cover? I do not have a wooden table top mine is SS. I have never used a cover and live in the south. It is hot and humid.

The table is wooden and where it will be placed is partially under the drip line from my roof. I want to protect it from teh rain etc. But never though about humidity trapped under the cover and what it might do to the table.

If you're looking to keep costs down go with a thermopop over thermapen.  Also, you mentioned using Amazon rather than dealer for some accessories - do not do that with either of those, go directly to Thermoworks own site.

    unnecessary accessories
    What a delightful oxymoron!

More seriously, a Thermapen will turn out to be the most useful tool you own, so put it very high on your priority list.

I'm just across the river from them in JCP. I checked out both Pench-A-Penny locations and Hagen had them beat for price and selection.

    My thoughts:

    CGS instead of platesetter
    Thermopen
    Welding Gloves
    Some cast iron
    Smokeware Cap
    Kick ash basket

I also like the new Smoke from Thermoworks

As far as getting rid of the weber... I'd keep the weber kettle - in my opinion, there are things the weber kettle does better than an egg.

Smokeware cap and KAB are nothing but luxury items. Nice, but not needed if forgoing those gets you a smoke, get the smoke.
Just bought an Egg?  Here is what you get to look forward to now:

Plate Setter, FlameBoss 200, Spider, PSWOO-CI, Additional Rig Shelf for dome cooking, Thermapen, iGrill2, Cast Iron, Blackstone, Cooking Accessories for the Blackstone, Cover for the Egg and the Blackstone, shopping for Rub like a fine wine or IPA, and a new fascination with lump and what brand is the best-all to be debated every Friday Night.  Next desires-Joetisceriie, Adjustable Rig, Grillmates, table and more eggs

I thought about just getting a nest but I want to have more prep room than the nest and folding tables would provide. We also have three dogs that love to chase each other around the pool and they aren't to careful about what they collide with. I figure a table would just protect the Egg better.

Plus I only get one shot at this thin. Deciding on adding a table at a later date won't fly with my wife. And I don't have the skills to build one.

Is a one shot all or nothing type thing and the Egg is the basis for my back yard remake plans.

Not trying to be a jerk - simply trying to build up your confidence......

No one "has the skills" to build a table until they've done it. It is not an immensely complex proposition. There are many free plans available and all the free advice you can handle via this forum.

Have a little faith in yourself man. You can do it!

My wife won't give up the garage space I would need while building the thing!

Seriously...this really is something I need to do.  With those plans from Naked Whiz on their table, you could pretty much print them out, walk into Lowes, find someone to help you get the wood, they can cut it to specs, and then it is just about putting it together it seems.  All for only a couple hundred bucks vs. $700.

    Slowly building courage myself........

IMNSHO, lots of the recommendations include lots of nice-to-haves, not the essentials. I have been a BGE owner for over six years now and have cooked literally well over a ton of food on it from high heat cooks to low and slows up to 25 hours long.

Here's my setup and it's still pretty bare bones:
Cinder block and patio tile "nest" with working surface/"table" (under $200)
    Bare Bones Large BGE

The only extras I use are:
BGE Plate Setter for indirect cooking
BGE Pizza Stone or Cast iron griddle (choose your preferred)
    BGE ash tool
    Cast iron dutch oven
    MAPP gas torch for lighting
    Thermopen

    The rest of the story:
    Tongs
    Spatulas
    Lump charcoal
    Foil
    unwaxed butcher paper
    towels
    cooler
    cutting board
    ...

The bottom line is that you really don't NEED a lot of accessories but you may choose to WANT many of them.

Last summer someone posted here about Home Depot selling a wet/dry vacuum for about $12. Bought one and have not used the ash tool since then. It does take up a lot more room to store it but the Egg cleans up much quicker.
  • Welcome! Platestter lifter and a good set of gloves were a big help to me. Love my Looftlighter. Good luck bro.

Of all the accessories I have purchased the top three that I can not cook without are a Thermapen, good tongs, and a quality pair of gloves (I use Blue Fire nomex / Kevlar). With those few accessories and a plate setter or a 13"  stone and spider you can cook almost anything.

Already mentioned but worth saying again. Do not buy the platesetter.

Go go to the ceramic grill store and buy the adjustable rig for the large with woo.

This is will cover almost every cooking scenario you would ever want

its a little more expensive than the platesetter but you won't need anything else- platesetter doesn't give you a raised grid, additional cooking levels, raised potential for pizza, etc.

I don't think you really need anything else right away aside from charcoal, a way to light it, and some meat to put on the egg.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

Thanks @SmokeyPitt I was beginning to think I didn't have enough cash reserved after reading some of these posts.

I know my Egg investment will grow over time as will my back yard remake. I just want to get the basics down right when I start. Then I figure how I use the Egg will dictate my direction from there.

Sounds like you are in pretty good shape. Two accessories I added later and use consistently are the  Smokeware cap and a BGE large pizza stone. The BGE stone is thicker than most where other brands seem to shatter at higher temperatures. The Smokeware cap stays in position when opening the lid and keeps rain/snow from entering the top when in use. I would imagine with a poolside set up, you will be making a lot of pizzas :)

I understand the thinking that goes behind this suggestion.

But I can't go into debt for my projects...so the plan is to do a large project each month when i get paid.

That is unless the eggcessories wreck my budget... :)

I would recommend getting the plate setter for now and see how you cook on it before buying much else. There are differant options and it gets overwhelming to try to earn the grill and accessories at the same time.

When I got mine, i bought a lot of eggcessories from him, and I only use the platesetter, ash tool, and ash scoop.

The rib rack, looftlighter, chicken stand, cover, and probably other stuff i can't think of go mostly unused.

The cover goes mostly unused. I will put in on some in the winter off it is going to snow. Keeps things clean, but it also traps a lot of moisture under it that can cause damage if left covered too long.

Good idea to put something on top of the wood table. I charred my table top pretty bad this spring.

I would recommend welding gloves and a thermopen right away.

I agree with SmokeyPitt. Take some time and see what you need. Time and some experience will tell you what you need for your next cook. A good accurate thermometer will help for the basics
