Anything non combustible to raise the grid is fine.

That is an option, but I use 4 bolts and 2 grids.

This is what I use on my LBGE. It works equally as well for raised indirect.

Pound three aluminum canned beers.  Set the empties on the fire ring with grid on top.  If a bit unstable due to the beers-get a second grid (weber has quite a selection: and put the cans on the gird on the fire ring then use the second grid at around gasket level.  Also, many use bolts and washers or fire bricks before venturing into the after market toy store.  FWIW-

two fire bricks and a second grate works for me, i just use a cheap carbon steel grate from home depot on the fire ring, stand two bricks on opposite sides and place the cooking grid on top, did this for a dozen or so years before upgrading, but it cooked the same

Yep, except three bolts is plenty and impossible to wobble. Also, you can place a pizza stone on the lower grid and you have indirect. No platesetter needed.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Crap, I just looked and they don't have that for the XL...looks like they have something somewhat similar.  I might just make my own from a spare grid and bolts
  • This what I made for raised direct. For an xl I would have used the flat bar that is just a tad larger. Both of the big box stores have flat bar.

Three bricks on the fire ring to bring the grid up.

Started with beer cans balanced on the fire ring.
Then beer cans on top of a second grate.
Then I upgraded to regular old red bricks (still use those once in a while)
    Then I got the AR.

Cook results were the same for all of those.  Sometimes I still use the bricks even though I have the AR because I want to use a full size grate at gasket level.  If I want a full size grate with the AR, I'm an inch or so higher...sometimes I want to be closer to the flame, and sometimes I need the height for larger meats.

Keep it simple to start with.  Everybody has a few cans around the house...

Careful with bricks on fire ring. If one falls into the hole, you could be looking at a new $firebox$. If you're going to use bricks, consider a second grid. Place one on the fire ring,  then the bricks, then the second grid. If you knock a brick over, no problem.

I like my 17+" Weber grid with carriage bolts. Been using it for a couple of years now.

  • Over the years I have heard that regular bricks sometimes explode in the egg. It is recommended to use fire bricks.

^^^^^^. This. When it is all said and done you really aren't saving much with all the work around and this product works and works well. It's a good investment into you cooking.
Just bought an Egg?  Here is what you get to look forward to now:

Plate Setter, FlameBoss 200, Spider, PSWOO-CI, Additional Rig Shelf for dome cooking, Thermapen, iGrill2, Cast Iron, Blackstone, Cooking Accessories for the Blackstone, Cover for the Egg and the Blackstone, shopping for Rub like a fine wine or IPA, and a new fascination with lump and what brand is the best-all to be debated every Friday Night.  Next desires-Joetisceriie, Adjustable Rig, Grillmates, table and more eggs

Actually was about to go that route and decided as much frustration as I have with the Platesetter I am going to get the Woo and 1/2 stones.  Then I can cook as I do now, raised direct, raised full or 1/2 indirect.

Actually since I do to N Dallas often enough I am just going to go the store and decide in person if this is right or the AR.  On paper (web screen) I get the AR and what it does, I just like the overall simplicity of the WOO.

You guys are right, of course. If I had a dollar for every time I saved a lousy 30 bucks by Macgyvering something like this, I'd be a wealthy man. =)

  • Yeah, I have to agree with dropping a little change to get something that not only works but works extremely well, with ease, and quality functionality. The CGS AR will lift a grate almost 7" above the felt and last probably longer than either you or I will. Well worth the shekels IMO.

Me too. This is from this morning, chicken thighs and roasted cauliflower. Three bricks wrapped in foil, set on the fire ring. Just have to be a little careful they don't fall into the charcoal, but I find once the grill is set on them, they don't really move.

I agree, the products from the CGS are well worth the money. My woo hangs off the side of my XL and gets used all the time. Yes, you can make a workaround for less money, but you won't likely find anything that works as well.

I use The Lifter from Smokeware. I think it was 25 bucks. much easier than assembling and disassembling bolts all the time or dealing with bricks.

I have 3 fire bricks heavily wrapped in foil I use for my medium. The foil provides a slight cushion if one falls in. Nothing broke yet.

  • I've done the big 3 mentioned here.....  Beer Cans, Firebricks, and the DIY Second grid with SS hardware.  All 3 worked great, er grate.....

    How did you bend these?
    What are the screws for?
does this sit on edge of firebox, then stack grate or PS on top?
