Question for the board....How do I get "raised direct"? Do I need one of those spiders or woo?

I put the flat bar in a vice and then hammered it. The screws hold the food grid in place. It sits on top of the fire ring. If you make one, leave a little bit of space between it and the inside wall of your egg, otherwise with heat expansion it may crack your egg. It was easy to make, and I believe the parts costs about 7 bucks. I have never used the ps with it, only direct cooking. Chicken halves come out great. I never tried whole chickens. I would imagine cooking direct with the thicker mass of a whole chicken it would turn out burned on the outside before the inside was done. Maybe not.I got tired of low airflow with the original charcoal grate, so I made one from expanded metal. I attached some legs to it so it does not slide when you stir the ashes. The expanded metal grate increased airflow so much I had to shut the vents more than before. It is basically a homemade KAB, but without the handles. I made it years ago before I knew about a KAB. Plan to crank out a few with handles next week for some early Christmas gifts in October. Also some for myself of course.

Before I raised the grid there were some thing I could not cook direct unless I had very little lump in the firebox. That worked, but sometimes I ran out of lump. I never had that problem since.cheeaa said:Am i the only one that doesnt worry about it and keeps the grid where it is? Its already raised enough imo -

Until i got the accessories from Tom, i used crushed beer cans and a second grate to get to or passed the felt line. Fire brick work too. Beer cans were always within reach.Large, small and mini now Egging in Rowlett Tx

I use terra cotta pot feet that sit perfectly on the fire ring. They give me a raised grid at felt line, and they are light enough that if they fall in to the fire box (never have) no risk of damage.

I do a lot of indirect cooks and I had platesetters for all but the mini (and an AR for one L). I now have Woos and have modded the platesetters to work in the Woos. This set-up works really well for me. I bought the stainless drip pans too. I love using this set-up. The Woo is worth it's weight in gold to me.L x2, M, S, Mini and a Blackstone 36. She says I have enough now....eggAddict from MN!
