I have read about the auctions and estate sales for wine. I went to one several months ago while up in Northern California. Entire lot was bought by an agent at the estate sale, while on the phone with a client in China, Last bid before I left was similar to your uncle's. I heard he bought it, but I never heard how much higher it went.rob75in said:YokonRon, next to his wine cellar was his office. In it was the following, signed poster of all the 'Rat Pack', signed Ali boxing gloves, Babe Ruth signed bat and loads more sport memorabilia I didn't recognise. The racks were full and he had crates of Chateau D'Yquem on the stairs! They retail at $400/bottle. Died at his desk! Gotta love life and live it! Me, I'm happy with my BGE,

The BGE has been Nirvana for me as well. Great therapy, great friends, great food. I have no desire to ever try any other cooker. Love it. Best folks I know in my life are the friends that were made here. They are my family.rob75in said:The racks were full and he had crates of Chateau D'Yquem on the stairs! They retail at $400/bottle. The BGE is just starting to take off here in Ireland. We're years behind you! Just starting to get some decent lump and wood for smoking. Hope to see many more new members from Ireland on this forum!

Not too bad for a couple of dudes from Kentucky. And yes, you did, big time, no doubt about it. They need a whole new term for "marrying up"bgebrent said:

So, along the lines of "drink it - don't save it", I need some advice and this seems like a good place to ask. I was going to start a separate thread, but YukonRon I hope you don't mind my tagging on (that is my intent - not highjacking).
About a year ago, I received a gift of a really nice bottle of wine from a good friend. He spent some time in Napa doing some wine drinking and fundraising for cancer research with a group that included MIke Krzyzewski (my friend is a Duke season ticket holder).
While on the trip he bought a bottle of really good wine (as near as I can tell) that has (for some) extra appeal because it has the logo of the Coach K Academy and has Coach K's signature engraved in the bottle. It is a bottle of Mirror 2008 Cab that got good reviews and from what I can tell sold for over $100 a bottle when it wasn't part of this collection. Because the proceeds went to cancer research I think my friend paid $500 for the bottle.
So, my question is "Do I ever drink this? If so, how "special" does the event need to be? A good night with good friends? An anniversary - with good friends? And ignoring the sentiment, when will this cab be best to drink? Does it matter if I keep it in my wine cooler or at room temp?"XXL BGE, Karebecue, Klose BYC, Chargiller Akorn Kamado, Weber Smokey Mountain, Grand Turbo gasser, Weber Smoky Joe, and the wheelbarrow that my grandfather used to cook steaks from his cattle

The discussion earlier about deciding when to open a rare, special bottle and life being too short, reminded me of one of my favorite scenes:

2008 vintages are not exactly rare these days for California reds, but they are getting there. They were of a solid vintage, but the '08 followed arguably the best ever California vintage of 2007. Much of the wine money went after '07, leaving an unusual supply of '08 floating around. (Many folks referred to the '08s as the "middle sister", loved and adored, but others got all the attention).Foghorn said:So, along the lines of "drink it - don't save it", I need some advice and this seems like a good place to ask. 2008 is good to go right now, and if storing it, keep it in your cooler around 55F serve at 65F. Keep it out of the direct sun, keep the cork wet.
Keeping it is no problem. It is typically good if stored properly for a good 20 years or so.
If it were I, .... I would have at your next event of celebration, which would involve a few folks you have an intimate friendship with. They would appreciate your generosity and you would have a very good bottle of wine with friends.
I have always said, the best wine I have ever had, is the wine I share with friends.
The thing you have to decide, whether or not it brings more value to you, to serve with friends, or put on the market targeting Duke fans, that may wish to buy it for a few hundred. There are many spectacular wines of recent, epic, vintages on the market right now which you would have no problem replacing your 2008 with, for less than $100.00 or the whatever the price it originally went for.
The only reason I keep wine is sentimental value. With coach K it may be worth some cash to a Dookie. Otherwise, what I have, I drink. Some might be for a special occasion, or if it fits the profile I know one of my peeps enjoy, I will hold it back, but I keep nothing exclusively.
Hope this helps, perhaps others will chime in with better advice."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

That's very helpful - and in line with what I was already thinking. Selling it is out of the question. I went to Duke and my friend was a senior during my freshman year. He taught me how to be efficient in my schoolwork so I could also have a lot of fun in school and life. It was Coach K's first year. We met Coach K when he came to our (and every other) dorm before the season started.YukonRon said:

I love the quote from Sideways @YEMTrey. Thanks.
