Does burned food give you cancer?

I am not here to preach, and yes, I've read other articles posted here on the topic. Just putting out the info, and no, I haven't changed my eating habits based on this or any other article I've read on the topic. I like my charred food charred and my non charred food not charred.
I just think the more info you have the better off you are. Enjoy.

The Dude: This is a very complicated case, Maude. You know, a lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-you's. And, uh, lotta strands to keep in my head, man. Lotta strands in old Duder's head. Luckily I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug regimen to keep my mind, you know, limber.

Health aspects aside, burned food doesn't taste good (to me at least). A well developed Maillard reaction giving that deep brown look is great. Going past that to actually burnt is not what I want.Southeast Florida - LBGE
In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’ Dare to think for yourself. -
I totally agree with you. i never look to burn food as I'd rather eat my shoe. A nice crust without tasting or looking burnt is the goal.jtcBoynton said:Health aspects aside, burned food doesn't taste good (to me at least). To be honest, I have no idea of what does or does not cause that horrible disease. I just hope and pray that someone comes up with a cure for it and soon. It has destroyed and taken far to many lives already.

I think Joe Jacksons song "Cancer" from the early 80's sums it up:
"Cancer"Everything
Everything gives you cancer
Everything
Everything gives you cancer
There's no cure, there's no answer

Ya a little burnt chicken is bad for you.... However the cereal and yogurt the health professionals recommend with a shi* load of sugar is better for you

I'll take my chances eating real food over an open flame any day than some garbage made in a factory or anything I have to put in the microwave.

Okay-at the risk of really going where I probably shouldn't and am not professionally qualified, I honestly believe that a cure for cancer is dang near impossible to achieve. Here are two paragraphs that are fairly straight-forward to see why:
A. The most common form of cell division is called mitosis. It is used for growth and repair. During mitosis, a cell makes an exact copy of itself and splits into two new cells. Each cell contains an exact copy of the original cell's chromosomes in their 23 pairs. This is the reason why all the cells in an organism are genetically identical.
B. Mitosis is closely controlled by the genes inside every cell. Sometimes this control can go wrong. If that happens in just a single cell, it can replicate itself to make new cells that are also out of control. These are cancer cells. They continue to replicate rapidly without the control systems that normal cells have.
I am all for fighting the disease and getting to where we can quickly mitigate any impact from detecting cancer, but I don't see a true cure in the future. And yes I have personal experience with cancer in my immediate family and prior with my parents.

Given that I haven't fully researched this topic of late, I will just say that there are likely to be multiple factors at play here. In Japan, they have historically had very high rates of stomach cancer relative to the rest of the world. Many years ago when reading on this, they were linking it to smoked fish---they evidently had some process for smoking and as a population ate WAY more than most do. Now, I haven't gone back and looked at data since then, but it would seem that there may be other compounds that could have similar effects, but likely would also require ingesting large quantities, etc. Kind of like inoculum size with certain microbial infections--as far as the possibility ratios of actually contracting something. I suggest further analysis.Lagrange, GA LBGE

I"m happier since I started egging. I think that must factor in somehow.
It will get me eventually (runs strong in my family). Live a good life for the days we've been given - least that's the way I figure it.Phoenix -
That's not the current USDA recommendations, now they're using MyPlate now, which suggest that half the plate should be fruits and veggies:bhedges1987 said:Eggcelsior said:

Secondly - if your chosen health professional is blindly referring you to the USDA recommendations (whichever iteration it might be), rather than working with you to see what kind of diet works for you - then yeah, @eggcelsior is probably right, you need to find a better health professional. There is really no such thing as an optimal diet that applies everyone, since it generally depends on your genetic makeup, your activity level, your personal gut microbiome, among a host of other things.LBGE
