ALUMINUM:

I've stopped using ALL aluminum in my grill except for a drip pan on top of a plate setter.

Charcoal burns hot enough to not only melt (liquify) aluminum but vaporize it as well.

Aluminum melts at about 660c which is well within the ability of an egg while it Boils at almost 2500c which is pretty close to how hot charcoal CAN burn.   That would be a full-tilt fire.  Charcoal CAN get as hot as 2700c, which is definately hot enought to vaporize aluminum.
UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS>

I'm not taking any chances and have banned aluminum from my grill

I can't think of a reason foil is in my egg with temps that high!

And to hell with those Rutland gaskets, I'm using asbestos, lasts forever and a day! Foil and duct tape - the handyman's two best secret weapons....

Asbestos...totally natural....mined from the earth. Lasts forever!  So it should be totally be safe, right?   Unfortunately, if you breath it, you won't ;)

its pretty difficult to get an asbestos gasket nowadays, pricey and the last one i bought i think was special ordered from ireland.  mental note, if you see specially trained firemen with hoses run into a tantalum plant housing a ton of pure sodium run =)

i love when people say they "aren't taking any chances"

you are more likely to be killed on your trip buying charcoal than to have anything happen to you pans.

especially since you are actually in control of the grill temps.

a similar issue comes up when someone uses galvanized hardware for making a raised grid in the egg.  many dire warnings of death, copy/pasting from MSDS info (out of context), and many bro-science barbecue myths repeated.

and to date, no such problem.  yet, theoretically, if everything went wrong, there's technically a chance.

Aluminum has been implicated in Alzheimers.     Also,  you can control dome or grate temperature, but charcoal STILL burns very hot.   It doesn't burn 'cooler', just generates less HEAT.

I don't want that stuff around me at all, even beverage cans.

I love aluminum. It gets the beer to my house!

Stainless steel is right up there in the rankings. You know, for kegs!

    From the Alzheimer's Association website:

Myth 4: Drinking out of aluminum cans or cooking in aluminum pots and pans can lead to Alzheimer’s disease.

Reality: During the 1960s and 1970s, aluminum emerged as a possible suspect in Alzheimer’s. This suspicion led to concern about exposure to aluminum through everyday sources such as pots and pans, beverage cans, antacids and antiperspirants. Since then, studies have failed to confirm any role for aluminum in causing Alzheimer’s. Experts today focus on other areas of research, and few believe that everyday sources of aluminum pose any threat.

It is true that aluminum concentrations are much higher in brain tissue in those with diagnosed Alzheimer's disease.

What current science tells us (and for the last couple of decades of science) is this is symptomatic and not causal.

There are no modern studies that correlate aluminum consumption with Alzheimers.  It's not really known what causes it, although there's a genetic predisposition to acquire the affliction.

    News Alert!!!

Some forms of Chromium are EXTREMELY toxic!!!  And stainless steel has at least 10.5% chromium content by weight!!!  AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!

I use an aluminum colander wrapped with silver duct tape, inside and out, and wear it on my head to keep the government from using special energy waves to read and control my thoughts. It is working. I would hate to have to give up my brain shield because it is aluminum.
Oh well, back to the lab.

False. Or rather "implicated" with no actual clinical evidence. Not even Dr Oz perpetuates that foolishness

Quit with the stainless example. I have tried that for years and no one believes it!

welding stainless is far more dangerous than galvanized metal.

@fishless My dad gave my four cases of Tanqueray the past year. Handles

doing my best to power thru them and flush the aluminum from my system. If you lived closer and didn't fish the weekends away, i'd maybe share.

Though weekends don't cut it. I have had to up the intake to nightly, and heavily. Still have a ways to go. May need to drink during the day too. My boss is cool with it though

I think copper works better on the aliens.  It's a lot more expensive, but you can't be too careful!  It's what I've been using all these years, anyway.

Tanqueray's my favorite gin as well.  Glad to know it helps cleanse the body of aluminum.  I think I may have to do another cleanse this evening...

Charcoal can burn hot enough to melt steel.  My car can go well over 100 mph but I don't drive it that fast in the city because bad things will happen.
