Any Special Eats When Far From Home?
So it got me thinking about regional food & restaurants away from your usual stomping grounds. When you're far from home, do you make a point of stopping at a restaurant or buying food you don't have near you?

Arnold's Lobster and Clam Bar on Cape Cod. It's not a chain if that's what you were looking for, but we go there at least twice and sometimes thrice during our week visiting my in-laws every summer.

As another variant to the question you asked - I often go to Long John Silver's when my wife is out of town....

When we do road trips, we go anti-chain and look for those out of the way diners and home-town restaurants. In your case, I would make an exception for Chick-Fil-A cuz you know how good it is and don't live near one... We lived in KSMO for 4 yrs before they finally got their first ones. The first 3 set CFA records in succession for the biggest grand opening. Funny thing is, I tried to open a franchise there 2 yrs earlier, except at that time they were not interested in that area because they didn't think it would be profitable.
So, to what part of PA are you going? -
When a friend of mine visited here from out of state, he wanted to go to White Castle. No thank you.Flint, Michigan

Guess I'm used to Chick-fil-a. Didn't realize they didn't go very far north.------------------------------

When away from home and time permits, I enjoy talking to a local or two just to find out where the best restaurant is. . . a place that exists only in that town that might be known for a specific meal or style of food. This restaurant should be as much a part of that town as the town is a part of the restaurant. If the local says "olive garden or applebees" - find another local. If the second local has the same answer, you drive to the next town.

It depends if I am staying a day or so, or making miles. If I am in town one night. I usually don't bother. Especially on business. A weekend in one city or several nights for meetings then I hunt local. If I'm going point A--B I eat salad from a drive byColumbus, Ohio--A Gasser filled with Matchlight and an Ugly Drum.

When we travel back to TX to see the in-laws we break the trip up to stay in Dallas solely for several places to eat (mexican/tex-mex mostly). If traveling somewhere totally new, I like to find the non-touristy places.
Sort of like when people come to Memphis area, everyone wants to go to Rendezvous but there are at least 3-4 BBQ places that just crush Rendezvous. I've yet to know anyone since living here past 3 yrs who ever goes there when they want BBQ.--Because I'm like ice, buddy. When I don't like you, you've got problems.

I've not understood the absolute craze for either Chik-fil-a nor In-n-Out Burger (when the In-n-Out Burger opened in Centerville UT, the cops had to direct traffic around it, at all hours, for months!! The Chiks here are packed constantly. The food is okay in both places, but I just don't get the excitement...
For me:
Ohio: Skyline Chili (go ahead, bring it on haters.
)
Pacific NW: alder-smoked salmon (several restaurants)
Either coast: seafood, especially fresh oysters if in season
Texas: 'que of course, even though mine's comparable; not a tex-mex fan
New Mexico: chile dishes, even though I make a lot myself of this too
Minnesota: I'm from the area, but I've had enough lutefisk, thankyouverymuch
Deep South: I'm not as familiar with all these dishes but I've hit some buffets that have fantastic dishes: chicken-n-slicks, collard greens-n-hocks, black-eyed peas, yum!
Maryland/DC: crabs; one night gotta dress casual and take a hammer to a bucketful!
Louisiana: mud-bugs, every time.
Damn. Four more whole years until I can retire, strap a sleeping bag to the back of Pig (my beemer) and ride-n-eat the rest of my life.

They're not terrible. I just don't dig chicken sandwiches. And they supported hate groups, so I just don't give them my money, just like I don't give any groups that support terrorism or hate money.DoubleEgger said:I hear Nola loves Chick Fil A...

Im kinda excited to try a sonic dog in a couple weeks. never been, but see the commercials everyday. They look good, are they?

Hate groups??? I can think of no group that hates more than all of the leftist groups. Those who want to destroy Family and even FREE Speech. Just because others don't think the way they do, they call it hate. Poppycock!!! There may be some right-wing extremist that are get sick and tired of having the left tell them what to do... but much less so than all of those groups on the left. I could write a dissertation on this but this is not the place or time.nolaegghead said:
