That's rough. I guess you'll soon figure out how good your dealer is with warranty claims. The good news is that this will not prevent you from enjoying a couple libations today.

Just had my second base installed... Take pics, contact Bruce and all will be well. Make sure and call, email response is a little slow
  • Noticed mine is cracked too. I'm just gonna wait until spring to replace.

I cracked the base on my large many years ago. I let a fire get away from me that was so hot it caught the wood underneath the base on fire.
The crack developed at a defect in the casting.

My dealer got the base replaced under warranty and even the freight was no charge.

A good dealer makes all the difference.

Thanks for the support everyone.  I am sure BGE is going to take care of me, but the hassle of everything... Ugh...   Could be worse though, huh??

It may take a bit longer to cool down if you cook with a cracked base. At least that's what my experience was and what clued me in to look for a crack. Other than that, its still usable. I would be careful if doing high temp cooks on a wooden deck or other surface that can catch fire.

Should not be much of a hassle to make your warranty claim, if you have a solid dealer. I took some pics, and made 1 phone call to the dealer. Went in that afternoon, showed pics and receipt from my phone, and I was done.

All of my BGE receipts are scanned to my dropbox folder, so I know exactly where they are at all times. The same cannot be said for all the other sh!t I'm supposed to keep track of though :)

Awesome good regardless of the bummer news.  It was an up and down weekend for me too.  Picked up a new small Friday.  Fired it up Saturday to cook on.  Cleaned out my large to get ready for a brisket and notice the firebox was cracked on it.  Luckily it's only half way around at the moment.

@saluki2007 ... you're in good company my friend.  I've got a connect the dots (vent holes) crack going around the firebox on one of my larges too.

@Jeepster47 That's exactly what mine is doing.  Went ahead and took some pictures while I had it out.  Not sure if I can turn this in for warranty yet or if I need to wait until it goes all the way around.

@saluki2007 ... Since Jim's on vacation this month, you might talk to Bruce at BGE ... at least get a new one scheduled to come in the next shipment.

See, that's why one should not clean their eggs ... it only leads to problems.

    Update:
Called my dealer Monday morning, sent pictures Monday late afternoon, and got the call at 8:20 this morning my base is in.  Whoohooo!! What a quick turn around!!

I have the extra Rutland gasket, and the stoves will be going in the house this weekend.  I will pick the base up tonight and put it in the basement to keep it kinda warm. I will light the stove when I get home tomorrow afternoon, strip the original gasket and install the Rutland. It should be fully cured by Sat night for a Sunday V-day cook!

Super per impressed with my dealer and BGE!!

What is going on !?!? I have a new dome in the box i just picked up yesterday , due to " deglazing ". I see this post while I'm cooking chicken tonight and and just happen to look , and mine  has the same crack in the same place heading the same direction. I don't do clean burns or or go nuclear with the temps. At the most i will let the chips and small pieces burn to ash between bags. I guess I'm about to have a couple of planters very soon.
    More meat please !! :-)

Hey @RRP I have a second Rutland gasket from you (thanks again!).
I want to put it on my new bottom. Any advise on the best way to strip the new gasket off?  I know to pull most off by hand. Now I am left with just the adhesive.
I was thinking of heating it with a blow dryer, scraping most of it off with a razor, then the paint stripper.
    Know of a better way?

Thanks @NPHuskerFL I may even hit it with some acetone if needed. I will have to see what it is like after the paint stripper.  I really do not want to, but if it gives me a pure base, I figure I breath in and eat a lot worse things than any residue that might be left.

Against all recommendations I used PVC cleaner to remove the gasket.
    Works great.
I know people get concerned about using a chemical to remove the gasket.
My thoughts are the solvent evaporates during the first burn with the new gasket.
