Kick ash basket

thinking about getting a kick ash basket, any thoughts? Suggestions? Comments about it?

    Of all the money you will spend on the BGE, this is the best. I have one for my XL and one for the MM. When I get my Medium, a KAB will be the first thing I will buy for it. After the first clean out, you will understand. Ease of clean is only one of the benefits, air flow is so much better, especially with L & S cooks. Killer product.

    No effects for low and slow. (I leave the KAB in with the fire grate) If I'm doing a low and slow all I have to do is lift the basket out and vacuum it. Guaranteed no air flow issue during the cook. Definitely worth the purchase in my opinion

    i just bought a couple for my L BGEs.  i have only done 2 cooks since, but it seems like it gets up to temp faster with better airflow.  no regrets.

    Do you leave the cast iron grate at bottom in or take it out when using basket?

    @Tspud1 ... take it out.  I've been using the older thinner basket for a year now on my main large egg and have noticed no sagging of the bottom.  Would imagine that the newer thicker rods that Chad has started using would survive on the XL egg.

    I have one and like it.  Take out the iron grate. 
    Richmond and Mathews County, VA. Large BGE, Weber gas, little Weber charcoal. Vintage ManGrates. Little reddish portable kamado that shall remain nameless here.  Very Extremely Stable Genius.

    Very well could be. I'd run without the fire grate but I feel that the air flow is more than adequate with it in place on my large. I still need to fire up my small and see how the KAB works with the grate. I can maybe see the small going solo

    ON my XL I left my grate in. I love the basket. Have one for small and xl. (took the grate out on the small.)

    @WeberWho? ... just pulling your leg.

    I think the XL probably doesn't experience much difference between grate in or out.  Looks like it has great airflow already.  The large does see better airflow ... plus a little less of the fire wandering off-center during low-n-slows.  I would think the smaller units would see a big improvement with the grate pulled.

    Thanks, I have large not XL but haven't used basket yet. In midst of a move. I may try it with and without bottom grate.

    It rusted completely out or surface rust? It's mild steel so corrosion is inevitable. This would mark the only HD KAB I've heard of failing due to corrosion. I'm sure Chad would fashion one of SS if it were driven by popular demand.

    I leave the grate in the bottom of the egg. Maybe I'm overthinking it as well....but my thought is with the wider slots of the KAB larger pieces of lit lump can fall to the bottom of the egg causing a cracked base. Now I have NO proof this could happen but in all the years I have been egging I have never had a cracked base either.

    I cleaned the ashes out of my Egg for the first time the other day.  I took the remaining lump and placed it in the bucket with my other lump while I cleaned the Egg.  As part of this process I let all the ash remain in the Egg.  I then used our small Oreck vacuum (think mini-shop vac) to vaccum it out completely.  It worked great.  Between cleanings I simply stir the lump around to get the ash to drop thru the grate.  I don't really see the use in this product.

    In addition to the ash shaking, it also dramatically increase air flow ability and protects the side air holes in your fire box from getting clogged. For comp. cookers, it allows for removal of coal from the egg for quicker cooling down. It's not a necessity. Of course, no gadget ever produced for the egg is a necessity, but it is definitely an upgrade and will improve the overall enjoyment for many eggheads around the world.

    Yea not as much as id like to. i also live 200 yds from the beach so salt air will destroy about anything

    Yea it pretty much rusted out. i enjoyed the convenience of the KAB it just didn't last long in the salt air. not much does.
