Advice on buying a used egg

Hello all!  I've been lurking for a while, but this is my first post.  I was hoping to get advice on buying a used egg. It's a large that the dealer used five times for demonstrations.  It includes the nest, a pizza stone, a plate setter, a bag of charcoal, and a bag of wood chips.  He's willing to sell the package for $900. It's like new and would still include the warranty.  Does that seem like a good deal?  Thanks for any advice.

    In my opinion, if it is in good working order and comes with the warranty you can consider it new. $900 is probably less than full retail but more than buying one at an Eggfest. The warrant is the key. 

    With th pizza stone that is probably a fair deal.

    Agreed warranty is key. Otherwise he'd be about $300 high.

    That's ok but they are around  $750 at most eggfests with 4 hrs use. Inthinkmi could buy a new one today for $900 at my full price dealer. You may be saving $50-$100... Maybe. 

    The only thing that matters is the warranty though. it's going to get dirty on the first cook anyway so if you save a few bucks all the better.

    Not wanting to sound like sour grapes, but let me start with a story. A guy was selling his late model powerful Corvette for a way below market price even though it only had 2,100 miles on the odometer! The interested buyer just assumed the seller's wife was afraid of such a powerful beast...but he finally asked about the low mileage. The seller sheepishly replied..."yeah only 2,100 miles BUT all were just put on a quarter of a mile at a time! "

    Get my drift? That dealer says only used for 5 demos but how long were those demos? Do you have a knowledgeable egger buddy who could go check it out with you? I agree the warranty is the key, but depending on who and how it was treated for those 5 demos it may have had a harsh young life. I'm also speaking from personal observation at Eggfests...not every new egg is treated with TLC.

    Doesn't really matter if used 5 or 50 times since it includes the warranty.  Everything is covered so who cares.  Now, I have no idea the price of a new Egg but even if you save say, $200, that's $200 you can spend on accessories or something else. Worth it in my book.  I'd go for it.

    $900 isn't saving $200.

    Offer him $750.  It's winter, not a busy time for egg sales in most parts of the country.

    Ok, I misunderstood.  He bought it from Litehouse Pools but hasn't registered it yet.  If that's the case and I wanted it, could I register it in my name for the warranty?  He also said he'd go down to $850.

    Do you know if Litehouse Pools is an authorized dealer? If I recall you have to list from where you purchased your egg, and if you cannot list an authorized dealer you won't be able to register the egg.

    That is my understanding... others may disagree.

    I paid $100 less ($750) at Salado fest last year from the on-site dealer, with receipt, 100% guarantee of warranty. This is not a good deal at all.

    I'd hold out for a Eggfest if there is one close.  I know it was different a few years ago, but I got all of that brand new for a 1000 and was told I could do a lot better. 
    I raise my kids, cook and golf.  When work gets in the way I'm pissed, I'm pissed off 48 weeks a year.
    Inbetween Iowa and Colorado, not close to anything remotely entertaining outside of football season.

    Remember? It has 2,100 miles BUT just put on a quarter of mile at a time? Personally, I'd turn around slowly and then RUN LIKE HELL!

    The warranty is only good for the original purchaser. It can't be transferred. This would be considered a used egg without warranty. It will probably sell used without warranty for around  $600 - $700. I'd look for a demo at an eggfest with a warranty

    900.00 is really kind of high, for a used egg. Whatever you do, get the warranty, in a blood oath, from your dealer. Should be able to pick up a demo unit around $700-$750.

    For the price, go to an actual dealer and I bet they would match it on a brand spankin new one.

    This "dealer" you are using is shady.

    I bought a used medium with nest for $300.00. No warranty and that's okay. At that price I'm good. This one seems a bit high and the warranty sounds dubious to me as BGE specifically calls out the warranty as non-transferrable. In order to get warranty, you need a receipt from an official BGE dealer.

    Find you an Eggfest.  You will save money, have the warranty and eat some really good food.

    I don't have a receipt for my large and my dealer went out of business.  But I did register it when I bought it new.  I have replaced several cracked pieces by taking pictures and emailing Bruce at the Mothership.  Actually stopped by on my way to TN and picked everything up one year.  Great customer service dealing with Bruce. Never had to produce a receipt yet.

    I lurk here often but rarely post. I don't necessarily agree with the used egg theory.  Not arguing the value of this egg in particular mind you.  I have bought new and have bought used. I have never registered my oldest egg. Anytime I call two different local dealers I have never been asked for a receipt and they are always wonderful. I wouldn't hesitate to buy used if I found value at the price you are paying.
