problem with 1st long smoke?

Just did 2 8# pork butts in my large BGE but the problem I had is all my BGE lump and wood chunks burned out in 10 hours so I had to reload to finish? I loaded to the top of the fire bowl and cooked at 230 degrees. I was also using the BBQ Guru Cyber Q. Just wondering if I did something wrong because I was under the impression that I could get at least 16 hour without reloading.

Load to the top of the fire ring. Did you have so very big pieces of charcoal, if you did you should arrangement those like a puzzle.

I have a XL, I game made the mistake of not filling it entirely. It cut short what should have been a 16 hour to 12. I have yet to do that goofup again. Do you have a KAB? Allows for better airflow."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

I also have a LBGE, and when I do Butts I can maintain 250 for 18-20 hrs before I shut 'er down. The next morning I still have lump remaining, not enough for another cook, but enough for another couple of hours if I needed it.
Key is loading up the firebox to the top of the fire ring, enough that the platesetter (legs up) needs to be jostled to fit flat on the lump.Large BGE

The powered units use more lump, and you were underfilled a decent amount.

thanks for the help, I went out and took a look and understand what you guy's are saying. there was definitely more room to be filled. Lesson learned!!! Pork butts came out great but just a slight panic there for a moment!

Yea I have done 16 hours at 230-250 and enough coals to cook hamburgers the next day. Clean out your egg like new. Fill to top of fire ring and you will be fine next time.

For some reason a lot of folks find this hard to believe. But Darby is 100% correct in this assessment. Forced or assisted draft will consume more fuel than natural draft except under a very few controlled conditions. For long cooks I always fill to the top of the fire ring.
