I haven't purchased a lot of accessories other then a thermopen and a couple of small things, but did buy a kick ash basket a couple of months ago.  Did not know about it until seeing it here.  By far, this is one great item.  If you don't have one, be sure its on your list.  Well worth the price.

The KAB's are a useful accessory. I'm sure you'll like it.

I also use one of those metal garbage pails for ash. On mine the lid handle is attached by punching thru the lid. That left some small openings that allow rainwater to leak into the pail. Not a real big deal but I did go ahead and dab some silicone sealant around the handle to prevent that.

Great customer support, too.  I have one for my lg bge and one for my KJ Jr.  The first edition KAB for the KJ Jr was shipped with the handles a little too high.  This made for a very tight squeeze when using the raised indirect setup.  I received word on Friday that my replacement KAB for the jr is on its way.  The thing is they were proactive and reached out to me first.  This sort of customer service is uncommon these days.

That's exactly what I use to shake the ash into. Works well. I've been meaning to ask this and it seems appropriate here, what do you guys do with the ash once the bucket is full. I have heard of people spreading it in their garden or compost bins?

I got the same email and my replacement will arrive Monday.

I thought the fit was just a mild annoyance and not anything that I would complain about.

Certainly very nice of them to offer up free replacements. As you said, that sort of service is unfortunately uncommon.

Does this replace the fire/lump grate or sit on top of it?

As long as you have the HD (heavy duty) version of KAB it can absolutely replace it.  Some still opt to use the fire grate, but I do not.  Works great by itself.

Thank you! I candled my lid tonight using a bright light in a dark room. I was surprised at the amount of openings around that handle so I too sealed them well! That garbage can will live its life (at least with me) outside in the elements!

I have the earlier (not HD) KAB for my Large and I've removed the fire grate, no problems so far (and I LOVE how the six breather holes stay unclogged!)

At the recommendation of the folks here, I bought one for my XL and Med.  I love those things.  I am also one of the those that uses a vacuum before each cook.  Next purchase will be the 10 gal metal trash can.  Thanks for another great tip.

If it is just a little bit of ash (from say, my KJ Jr.) I just go ahead and spread that ash across my yard or garden areas.

The bucket I fill with Kingsford ash and if the ash from the other grills has larger bits of unburnt lump it too goes into the can. When the can is full I just bag it and toss it in the trash can.

I have had one for my large for 4 months, completely 100% satisfied........ So much so that I ordered one for my small and used it for the first time the last three days and again completely 100% satisfied. The best part with the small was that yesterday I had to cool the egg so I could put it in the car to go home, took the Kick Ash basket out dumped the hot lump pulled out the fire ring, fire box and 2 hours later it was not hot at all. :)

I've had mine since early spring. After a couple months or so it looks like it's 10 years old. I hope I can get another summer out of it.

Let me know when it won't hold the coal any longer as designed. That is, if I'm still around when that happens.

Can you post a picture? Is the metal the same diameter as when you got it? I don't see any reason why it won't last for years and years. The one in my large looks all nasty too but structurally sound as the day it was made.
