OT Campfire Cook... (PICs)

Haven't cooked anything interesting on my egg lately, but I had a great time kayak camping this weekend and figured I'd share the cook (as a similar experience I posted last year was appreciated.)
Our campsite- wine cooling for dinner as the water temp is slightly cooler than the air.

Anyway, kayaked out to an island with my 7 year old for the night. Last minute idea so I just grabbed some odds and ends because I know if the fishing isn't good, I always enjoy the cooking.
The fishing sucked...
I decided on a simple steak cook this time and saw a couple nice Filet Mignons so grabbed them. I hit them with S&P at home, a little fresh garlic, and wrapped them each with a sprig of rosemary. Took the sprig out before cooking...
Yes! I was tempted to do a cowboy cook with one of them and throw it right on top of the log. Didn't have the nerve to risk one though if I mucked it up or threw it on top of a stinky pine log or something. (did have one end up on the fire that smoked a bit).

I took these guys off when they were well cooked on the outside and seemed rare on the inside (by feel). Put some butter on them after the last flip, took 'em off, and I tented them with some foil....
...while I sauteed a chili pepper and some onion, reduced some of that red wine and then added a splash of cream before serving. The sauce was awesome! Only flavor was from the pan and whatever came off the steaks. Actually, I think I threw some seasoned salt in there...maybe a splash of hot sauce. Yeah, that sounds more like me. Anyway, it was killer.

That nice sauce was served over the steak, along side some corn/taters/beans that were cooked in their cans while I was prepping the steak!

Phone pic may not show it, but I was aiming for MR and it came off more rare. Great for most of you, a little tender for me, but oh man was it good (and the leftovers, we'll get to those)

Woke up and made some coffee and got started on breakfast. (coffee made fireside after a night out is a fantastic thing)
I started off by heating up that leftover steak as my son had mostly hot dogs the night before.
Cooked that up with a red jalapeno and the rest of the onion, and a couple soy sauce packets thrown in for good measure. I ate half of it right out of the pan. That steak was so tender and flavorful the next morning. I think I liked it better than the night before...

Steak and Eggs! Oh man I want another plate of that right now....

We piddled around a little bit and made a mid-morning snack of chocolate chip cookies which turned out surprisingly well. Just put some foil under the cookies and over the pan. Cooked them slow and careful. Here is my son checking on them...

THEN...
...It was time for SECOND BREAKFAST!
Now, we didn't need second breakfast as we'd had plenty to eat. But, as you may know there are few foods finer than bacon cooked over a campfire. ...And I had some thick cut boar's head in the cooler that we didn't make earlier. So on it went -

That is pretty much all you need when camping riverside by the way. Just bring a few pounds of bacon and maybe a loaf of bread. Cook the bacon, fry your fish in the grease, eat it all between bread. Its not good for you, but it's oh so good!
But today we had pancakes instead to close out 2nd breakfast.

And that concludes a few fun cooks on the river.

Great post. You camp like my son I do. Keep a fire going pretty much all the time and eat and drink way more than you should - but as you and others have pointed out, it tastes way better when camping.

It really is unique. Car camping you are usually packed in next to some other fine people. Good company, perhaps, but lacking in privacy and sharing a toilet with 100 friends. Backpack camping is likely fantastic, but I haven't done it because I don't have a set of light cookware to throw on a pack and really...where would I put the wine and beer?!?!GATraveller said:That's awesome!!! But kayak/canoe camping is awesome! It is kind of like car camping because you can bring a ton of stuff (paired down but still heavy) and you can't beat the view and the sounds of the water next to you as you sleep. Plus, you have to work a bit to get to your campsite. Which makes the fruits of your labors just that much sweeter. Just like the bacon...
Great to see some other forum eggheads have experienced this as well!

A paddle trip in Boundary Waters - Quetico Provincial Park is on my bucket list. It'll be in a few years when my son is big enough to help portage the canoes and gear between lakes. I plan on having a float plane fly us in to our gear then spending 7-10 days paddling and fishing our way out. Heaven!!KiterTodd said:

I need to try that with a kayak sometime, looks like a great time. I know what you mean about the trailers and such, we camp on primitive sites in maine and access with the lobsterboat. its not primitive camping other than you wont see anyone, we bring a 14 x 24 foot wall tent, wood stove with water heater, smoker, keg and bottle beer, cots, card table, fishing gear, whole turkeys, prime ribs, the dogs etc
I had maybe 3 inches freeboard before the boat sunk with all the stuff onboard last time for the initial 18 mile trip up lake and river into nowhere fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
@Thatgrimguy We'll have to.... I have a couple inverter generators and an 8000 BTU portable AC (ducted) so we can pitch a tent and sleep in comfort...but nice to be able to hang out away from the heat in retro style!Thatgrimguy said:

I have done canoe and boat (Mastercraft) camping. It's a lot of fun. You do get that "middle of nowhere" remote location but get the benefits of car camping - namely luxurious cargo and consequently, camp. I am planning some boat camping...just too hot right now to even take the boat out.
