Anybody have any experience building their own table. I've been looking at buying one for quite sometime now but I'm convinced that one could build their own for a fraction of the cost.

Have you looked at the EGG Table Forum yet? There are a lot of people here who have built their own and check out http://www.nakedwhiz.com/nwindex.htmhashissmokin said:Anybody have any experience building their own table. The more and more I look at the cost of some of these tables I'm not so sure I could build one much less than buying one.LBGE, Paris, KY.

All depends on how fancy you want to be. The BGE tables I've seen are outrageously priced for what you get. I was looking at a restaurant supply place locally and they had nice sized SS tables for $400 and some change and casters were another $40. Not sure of grade and they would need a little mod to sit the egg in.
I mine out of rough cypress with a granite inset and a big drawer on the bottom for around $400. OTOH, I wish I'd just waited about six months to decide if I really wanted one. -

I regret the one I built. I think I would like a nest and handler with a side table for work space better. Mine is heavy, it's a pita to move and now I have a second egg sitting on my work space. If I knew then what I know now I would have gone a different route. I'm a few months away from building a OD kitchen area.
If if you're just getting started I'd encourage waiting to see what you really want in a table. -
I've always thought about just leaving it in the nest and getting a side table for storage and counter space.LBGE, Paris, KY.

That's what I've done. I need a nicer side table to be sure, but I have no interest in putting an egg in it.hashissmokin said:I've always thought about just leaving it in the nest and getting a side table for storage and counter space.I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

I'm too old to be very handy, anymore, so I just paid to have someone build me a table out of cinderblock faced with stone, and I love it. But I've seen too many pictures on this forum and the older one of really awful fires that started on a wooden table with an Egg on it. I have seen some really cool tables that looked like they were just some sort of stone blocks stacked on each other, not even any mortar anywhere, with granite or concrete or something as a top. I think anybody who has a decent back could build one of those, wouldn't be too expensive, and it WON'T BURN. (Well, probably they poured a concrete base, I don't know.) Here are a few pictures:

Kentucky brother, I really like having my eggs (L & XL) in nests. Being able to rotate them periodically depending on wind direction to avoid too much smoke in the face is nice. You'd want to be on a reasonably smooth surface. I'd agree with try nest plus side table first. Big $ savings too.Sandy Springs & Dawsonville Ga

Kentucky brethren, I have been contemplating a table, MBW wants one, but, I like the current portability of the nest for my XL, and for the MM, I bought a small wooden outdoor table at World Market and a ceramic tile piece for the top of the table from Lowes all for under $40.00. Looks good and does the job.
I will reference the earlier statement, to wait and plan. I do major cooks, and not having the table has not been an issue thus far. Still thinking of the right set up."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

^ That's what I did. Left them in the nest and bought a table for extra space and storage. I've since bought a couple of plastic boxes to store the lump and wood chunks in underneath. I like the mobility of the setup.Steve

Honestly I wish that I had kept my nest and just bought a prep table for a couple of hundred dollars. Mine is way to heavy to move around and it's a pain to take the egg out.1 large BGE, Spartanburg SC
