I have a birthday coming up and have an amazon gift card as a gift. I was thinking of firing on these two thermometers:

ThermoWorks Super-Fast Thermapen
Maverick ET-733 Long Range Wireless Dual Probe
Does anyone have any experience with the wireless one? I know the thermopen is a must have but the wireless one is of great interest to me for my long brisket cooks over night. I dont have to leave the bed to check the temp.http://www.amazon.com/Maverick-Range-Wireless-Smoker-Thermometer/dp/B00FOCR4UI/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1435081455&sr=8-13&keywords=thermapen

I have both, the Thermapen is on sale today only for $77 dollars. The Maverick is pretty awesome too!
Buy today, don't delayI've slow smoked and eaten so much pork, I'm legally recognized as being part swine - Chatsworth Ca. -
I've got the thermapen and the iGrill2. I haven't used the Maverick, but the iGrill2 is fantastic.
Really what you get just depends on what you want to be cooking - the thermapen is great for shorter cooks - where the iGrill2 is awesome for long overnight cooks.

You'll probably get a zillion replies to this one, but really, I think BOTH of the thermometers you mention are essential. Any kind of low and slow cook will require the Maverick which helps you keep an eye on your grill temp and meat temp over the course of your cook. And with the Maverick's wireless receiver, you just keep it with you in the house or yard or wherever you are and you know exactly what's going on with your cook. The Thermapen is also a must have, and would be used on EVERY cook, at least it is for me. Cooking chicken and to make sure you are done? Probe it with the Thermapen. Cooking Pork and want to make sure you are safe? Same...hit it with the Thermapen. Once you get used to cooking with it, you will NEVER grill without it. I have been helping out at a neighbor's BBQ and wished like crazy I had my Thermapen with me to verify "doneness". I also use the Thermapen when I want to verify my low and slow Pork Butt or Brisket are the temp the Maverick is telling me. Thermapens also allow you to probe your meat for that "like buttah" feeling which is another indicator of "done". Sorry for the length of this post. Hope it helps at least a little...

Those are all reasons I want the thermopen. I grill chicken and pork often and i hate waiting on my current cheap thermometer to finally read the temp after a few minutes. I have to take the chicken or pork off the grill to get the internal temp. Thanks all I may fire on both since my favorite cook is the overnight brisket.EagleIII said:You'll probably get a zillion replies to this one, but really, I think BOTH of the thermometers you mention are essential. Interested in the feedback. I have a DigiQ DX2 and use it for overnight L&S but need a wireless thermometer to monitor from inside. The alarm on the DigiQ isn't very loud (which means I can't hear it from my bed).

Buy both. I have two thermapens and old old Maverick. Awesome for the low and slow cooks. And I can probe check it at the end with the thermapen. The Thermapen is awesome for hot and fast, checking the deep frier oil temp, in the kitchen, all kinds of uses.

If you are interested in a good night's sleep and do overnighters on a regular basis, you might want to just get a stoker. The Maverick is good, I have two, 732 & 733. They will alarm and tell you when pit temp is too high or too low and when meat has reached target - they will not maintain the temp level for you. For twice the price of a Maverick you can get a stoker that will maintain the pit temp. Lots to choose from. Stokers will give you piece of mind and ensure uninterrupted sleep (most of the time)....Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

Thermometers? ... don't waste your $$. My egg holds temp like a rock. Don't know the temp cuz I have no thermometer, but it stays hot to touch for hours.
As far as food temps. Who cares. I can tell steak, burgers, chicken, and broccli doneneness just by looking. Brisket I need to poke.
I actually don't even use an egg. I just use a coffee can and some sticks. Best food ever.I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.
