FIFO Bottle

Many BBQ sauce bottles have 18 oz of sauce.  The average cheap squeeze bottle only holds 12 oz ... damn.  So, I surfed around for some 20 oz squeeze bottles and stumbled upon the FIFO bottles.  They are dishwasher save, look easy to clean with removable top and bottom, and have three different replaceable nozzle sizes.  Think they're the same bottles that Subway uses.  Does anyone have any experience with them?  Using them for BBQ sauce?

They look like that would work.  I just use the bottle the sauce came in, but if I was to have a lot of sauce the big bottle of Blues Hog this thing would be great.

No I haven't but it makes sense! FIFO will mean you are always using up the oldest first. BTW the term FIFO is borrowed from my profession. It's an accounting method for evaluating inventory. There are actually 3 terms:
FIFO = First In First Out
LIFO = Last In First Out
FISH = First In Still Here (a little accounting humor there!)

Ah Michael, thanks for the laugh.

I swear that all BBQ sauces use glue as a secondary ingredient.  Leave them in the back of the frig for a couple of weeks and the lids are frozen in place.  Plus, they're all different in size and shape ... but all manage to drip sauce down the side of the container.

I used a simple, after-market, nozzle type of squeeze container a few weeks ago and loved the simplicity of it.  No mess no fuss.  Used just the right amount to baste the ribs then took the squeeze bottle to the table, and again, used just the right amount on the plate.  No spill, no mess, no fuss.  That's why the interest in obtaining some more containers.

That does raise a great question...why can't they just sell condiments in squeeze bottles that don't suck?  Every ketchup squeeze bottle works the same.  You can either have zero ketchup, or a huge glob. Squeeze...nothing...a little harder...nothing...a little harder...1 cup of ketchup in a single blob on your burger.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

I like the new ketchup bottles that you can store upside down.  Less chance of the blob coming out.  Shaking it sometime helps too especially the stardust.

I just use old glass catsup / ketchup bottles from Heinz.  I can plop them in a warm water bath to heat it up if I want warm sauce, or just let it ride at room temp.  Dishwasher safe and sanitized easily as well.

A quick update on the FIFO bottles.  I ordered a couple of 20 oz bottles and a 16 oz bottle.  The 20 oz bottle is a good size for my fridge ... fit's in the door perfectly.  The 16 oz is the same height, just a little thinner. Caps are interchangeable on all bottle sizes, so it's easy to mix and match.  Also, ordered additional flow caps so that I could test the three different nozzle sizes ... the thin tip works best with a medium BBQ sauce like Rudys or Red Mud.

For cleaning, the double end opening on the bottle is great.  The bottle breaks down into: cap, bottle, valve cap, and silicon nozzle ... throw the four parts into the dishwasher and you're good to go.  Like the fact that they don't absorb the color of the sauce like the $2 bottles made in China.

The bottles are handy to use ... no beating off a glued on cap, no dribbling down the side of the bottle, plus, the nozzle stays clean so that the bottle can go directly back to the fridge without any cleanup.

Application of the sauce is not idiot proof ... you have to squeeze the bottle enough to open the nozzle, then back off a little as the sauce starts to flow.  Not a big problem when using the thin tip 'cuz the quantity is limited by the nozzle size ... but, if you use the thick tip, you better not expect just a dollop of sauce.

The major problem that has to be overcome is the transition from fridge to table.  When the bottle starts to warm up on the table, it pre-pressurizes the bottle ... just picking up the bottle might (at least once per meal) be enough to deliver a stream of sauce all over the table.  The work-around is to place the bottle on the table with the nozzle facing upwards.  Talked to the company and that's their suggested work-around also.

Will devote the 16 oz bottle to Dukes mayo ... think that's where the concept works well.  Small distribution amount for smearing ribs and such.

Yep, there are lots of inexpensive/cheap alternatives, I just really, really like the elegance of the concept.  Now, as to the execution ...

+1 on squeeze bottles.  I found them to be very efficient with bbq sauce, now I use them for tons of different things.   Olive oil, vinegar,  soy sauce, lemon juice, mcb sauce, peanut oil etc.  As far as not being big enough - I just leave the rest of the bottle in the back of the fridge,  and when I have to fill it that's my cue to resupply.

Sometimes these are sold without lids. Ace hardware sells little rubber caps that work perfect.

@Jeepster47 ....  Thanks for checking this out.... For those that make homemade sauces it is an issue with storing and messes the jars and other containers make. I look forward to hearing how it works with the mayo etc....

Thanks for the review @Jeepster47. I've been looking for them locally and I can't find them. I guess I'll have to order online. I've been using some from Restaurant Depot but they are just okay.

That's a good idea for the RD squeeze bottles I already have. Thanks for the pro tip @blasting

@DoubleEgger ... FIFO is a Canadian company, so they may have a better chance at local purchases.  Both Tundra Restaurant Supply and Wasserstrom Restaurant Supply handle the product here in the states.

Besides Subway, Taco Bell, and Papa Johns, we have a local family restaurant that uses the FIFO bottles.  Order mayo on the side at the family restaurant and they deliver a FIFO bottle of mayo to use.  Forgot to check the nozzle size, so loaded up my 16 oz bottle with Dukes ... although all of the nozzle sizes will work, the medium nozzle looks to be the best choice.
