Just bought Egg .. got home and saw this..

I just picked up a large egg and some accessories for $1200 tonight from local hardware store. They are an official Egg dealer ... they had some pre-made so I just said that was fine....

I got home and see a bent bolt..

Would you advise to return this unit?

@mjfutures nothing to worry about.  Mine was installed on site the same way and my wife bought direct from the mothership.

Someone will post more detail I am sure but yes the band bolts are supposed to be tightened until they bend.

I'd suggest to bend the other bolt.  Check every few months to make sure they haven't moved.  Especially with high heat cooks. We've seen pictures of domes on this forum that have fallen out because of loose bolts and nuts.  A good habit is to check every season change for tightness.  Plus it only takes a few seconds

Google... bent big green egg band bolts. Thanks for the laugh. Seriously, I LOL'd when I read your post. :) BTW, both should be bent.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Got a torque wrench?  Torque to specs at 125 Inch Pounds and watch them bend even more.

I disagree with tightening until the bolts bend - BGE is one of the only ceramic kamado companies that actual gives you the science to tighten the band bolts. 125 inch pounds (for the MBGE/LBGE) - if they are bent, so be it, if they are still straight, that's good too. The bolts on my four year old MBGE are straight as can be.

One more question since i'm new to this .... I got the Nest with handle.. but on the nest there are 4 plastic grippers that keep popping off when I try to move or adjust .. are these needed? It looks like they protect egg from scratches but are a pain.

    like this

Rubber pieces in this pic up on the green part of egg.

They're not really needed and can melt to the egg after a while.

Maybe you can get some felt like used on the dome gasket and put it between the nest and the egg so the egg doesn't scratch.

Relax, you have a good dealer.
It is up to you, the Egg owner to keep them tight... and they will loosen up.
