I finally found a use for Royal Oak

After 10 straight days of rain I needed to dry out all of my Eggs. I had a bag of RO that I've been avoiding for awhile and decided to use it to dry out my Eggs. It's working!

Any road will take you there if you don't know where you're going.

It's good for clean burns too!
-
While your drying out your egg put that Arkansas mat in there also
-
I use Royal oak a lot. No problems with it. I've done a 16hr cook with it also. MBGE with KAB!
-
Ha! I might have done that about a year ago. I think the football team is finally back and we're hosting a baseball super regional this weekend. See you in Omaha!Lecky said:While your drying out your egg put that Arkansas mat in there alsoAny road will take you there if you don't know where you're going.

I'm not a RO hater. It's just not my favorite.clifkincaid said:I use Royal oak a lot. No problems with it. I've done a 16hr cook with it also. MBGE with KAB!Any road will take you there if you don't know where you're going.

RO is just fine, not the best out there, but certainly not the worst. Our's is up to close to $20CDN a bag (about $16US) - making other choice better. Stiull when it is on sale it is just fine. Consider that this opinion is coming from a lump whore!Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

Its $12 a big bag here. The others are $25...I'll split the difference and buy better meat

Or good for everything I cook.

I have a hard time spending $25-$30/bag for "premium" lump - although I may get a bag or two for special cooks to see if there any difference. I use RO almost exclusively and have never had any problems - I have an XL and once had a very large pork butt go almost 20hrs at ~225 to reach 195. It stalled at 168 for almost 4 hrs. Temp was right and wasn't in a hurry to eat, so just let it go. I then let the lump burn and finally shut it down after 25hrs. Used the remaining to do a burger cook.

OK, you burn off with it, I'll cook ribeye
with it.

What's the problem with Royal Oak? I've tried all sorts of lump and it's one of my favs. I don't even buy it bc it's cheap. I buy it because it works. Well.

@Doc_Eggerton what is that side with the steak? Is it a roll cut up with cheese melted in it? I think I've seen pics of that before. Looks great!

So did you have you egg station built or did you do it? It looks pretty nice. Is it a wood or steel sub frame under the tile?Hawg Fan said:After 10 straight days of rain I needed to dry out all of my Eggs. Hey @Doc_Eggerton. I've been back and looked at that awesome looking cheese bread that you posted. Can you share the short version of how you prepared this please. Type of cheese, bread, herbs etc. and how you cooked it.
thanks.GWN -
Nice looking set up.

Get some nice bakery bread, not too hard and crusty, cut slices and stuff cheese. Not much more. Mozzarella works as does pepper jack. I also like the shredded "Mexican" cheese. Bake at 350 until the cheese melts. We usually sprinkle with Italian seasoning.Nanook said:Hey @Doc_Eggerton. I've been back and looked at that awesome looking cheese bread that you posted. I'll admit to using RO, not on the regular but I have no complaints. I hate to say it but ive only found trash (metal, rocks & paper) in bags of lump that cost almost 4x more than RO.
-
I can't help myself, I have to come out of the closet, I use RO in my webber kettle. I use RW in my large egg.
-
Thanks @Doc_Eggerton. That's the exact place I saw it. Looks great! Can't wait to try!!Pittsburgh, PA - 1 LBGE

I built it last year. It has a wood subframe covered with concrete board under the tile.Ladeback69 said:So did you have you egg station built or did you do it? It looks pretty nice. Is it a wood or steel sub frame under the tile?Any road will take you there if you don't know where you're going.

my wife says that wanting more than one egg is a mental illness, but she sure does like the product that comes off of it.

JK, as stated above - it's all I use. I've ordered all sorts of lump that's been recommended here. And then spent 30-40 minutes trying to light it. I've got better things to be doing with my time. Like drinkin beers!
