OT - looking for good barbecue on Eastern road trip
We are planning to do two half days and two full days of driving. We will be stopping in Amarillo, Little Rock, and Knoxville. Not exactly BBQ Meccas, I know. So I was hoping maybe some of you would know some decent places (not chains) around these cities. Thanks in advance!

I've never eaten in Amarillo, but according to the Texas Monthly top 50 BBQ places in Texas, there's a place named Tyler's in Amarillo that made it in 2013. They haven't released the 2015 list yet.

Thanks! Last time I did this route we stopped at this Texas steak house in Amarillo that I think is pretty well known - it's this place where if you can eat a 72 oz steak in an hour - with all the trimmings - it's free. In retrospect, a place like that probably uses a gimmick for a good reason - the food was pretty average.Legume said:I've never eaten in Amarillo, but according to the Texas Monthly top 50 BBQ places in Texas, there's a place named Tyler's in Amarillo that made it in 2013. The Big Texan. The one time I drove through Amarillo, we stopped so the kids could look around. We took some pics and then decided to keep moving. One of those places that looks better on TV.THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

I recommend dipping down to I-10, stopping in NOLA, swing by my crib for some real home cooked BBQ and creole food, then heading back through the coastal roads where you'll see rednecks like SGH and adults suffering from thalidomide-borne disease from the '50s.

I-40 means Memphis and it's hard to find a bad BBQ place there. Try Central BBQ, 4375 Summer Avenue. (901-272-9377) or Jim Neely's Interstate Bar-B-Q, (901-775-2304).XL BGE - Indianapolis, IN

You won't be too far away from Big Bob Gibson's in Decatur, AL.

I stopped in a place not too far from the highway in Little Rock on a trip to Hot Springs last year. Highly rated on Yelp, if that means anything to you.

BBQ is a celebration of culture in America. It is the closest thing we have to the wines and cheeses of Europe.
Drive a few hundred miles in any direction, and the experience changes dramatically.

Load up on brisket in Texas and don't stop until you get back to NC.

Amarillo also has a Rudys which is a pretty good regional chain BBQ place. Albuquerque also has one, so you might be familiar with the place.

Once you get back and settled in, consider a trip to the Kamado Grille in Raleigh.
A good friend visited during their first week and thought them good enough to say he'd return.
He did note that, when he mentioned that he owned a BGE, the response was a bit snobby/snotty (They use KJs, of course) . . . but not enough that he and companion couldn't laugh it off.
All in all, he thought they did a good job.

@KareemOliverDiaz thanks for the medical advice. Sounds like you're "self-taught".

Not to get back on topic or anything, but Bobby Q's in Cookeville, TN used to be pretty darn good. Haven't been in a few years but they still get good reviews. Not too far from I-40, so you won't end up in Deliverance country looking for it.

There are several Whole Hog restaurants around LR. Not bad, but not great. I cant think of anywhere here in LR I would recommend for BBQ. If I want bbq, I cook at home.DieselkW said:I stopped in a place not too far from the highway in Little Rock on a trip to Hot Springs last year. I was going to suggest hitting up a costco in Amarillo or on the way to pick up some briskets for your freezer, and maybe a pelican to carry them in, but it doesn't look like you'll sniff a costco once you leave ABQ until you get to TN and you'll probably be out of brisket country by then. Might find a source in Amarillo with a little research, but that may be too much to carry with a car full of family.
