I must be getting old!

Bought a Maverick ET-733  and the instructions just seemed to confuse me. I would turn one unit on, then the other b ut couldn't get the settings right, so I had the wife read it to me step by step pressing this, pressing that and no temp readings were coming from the probes. After much screwing around, I realized that I had not pushed the probes deep enough into the Maverick! You see, in the past, these hands have been known to over tighten bolts and many other things to failure so to me these probes and this thermometer seemed a candidate for a light touch. Anyway, the Mav works so well and it was money well spent.

I agree that it can be overly complicated to get that thing working right. I am sure they could make it a little easier.

Yep. One of the worst set of instructions and convoluted set ups. Once you get it, it does work well.

Can only assume Maverick knows what they are doing, but for the life of me I can’t see the advantage of the food select and taste settings. I use the 733 for all indirect cooks and I just leave the probes plugged in. I seldom use the food probe, it mostly just tells me the outside temperature. As the alert is always set above outdoor temps, there are no false alarms. The pit probe range is helpful. I do miss the timer function on the older 732...
Unless you still have a VCR and it is flashing with 12:00 you are not getting old - the 733 operation is not the easiest to grasp. I even pop the batteries out of the receiver between uses as the damn thing will continue to search for a transmitter even if it is turned off.

Haha I do the exact same thing.  I have my wife read it over when I get pissed. She takes the time to read it and figure it out when i just want it done.

I am sure some people like the fact that they can select the meat from the list etc, but I know what temp I am shooting for. I just want it to be simple to program the alarm.

Like a one button push for low, high, and target temp. I am glad to know I am not the only one that has trouble with it.

Totally agree. Needlessly complex with a huge number of button pushes relative to what you're trying to change. I do like the ability to remotely make sure my egg doesn't go nuclear while I'm not looking.
