I think sonny bryants in Dallas uses them. Has then in a bucket of water, throws them on the fire to control it.

We have no pecan trees but loads of hickory trees which produce hickory nuts by the bushels. I always gather a 5 gallon bucket and just throw a couple hand full in my fire when I want free hickory smoke. BTW - no I do not crack them - just nut meat and all! Only storage issue is a lid for the bucket since by winter mice will find that bucket a treasure trove! Don't ask why I know that!

stike uses hickory bark for smoke wood. dunno about nut shells. but if you can eat the nuts, i would think you could smoke the shells the nuts come in.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Brother I have done it on a limited basis. The biggest problem that I encounterd with them is that they are consumed very fast. Almost useless on a stick burner. On a Kamado they work a little better but are still not ideal in my opinion. The shells produce a slightly bitter taste compared to the wood. Bitter may not be the exact word to describe the taste difference, but it's close. Especially if you try pouring the smoke to it with shells alone. Some folks like them, I myself do not.

Yes he does, Michael, but to be specific he uses shag bark which can be peeled off without damaging that species of hickory. BTW some people also boil that bark down to get a thin but tasty homemade syrup where shag bark trees are plentiful as it takes a bunch!

personally English walnut shells are ok, but I'd avoid black walnuts for sure. BTW, Tom your pork result looked tasty tonight.

    Thanks Ron.

Darn, it's too bad that black walnuts won't work.  The darn squirrels spend all winter burying the nuts on the backside of my property.  Then I spend all spring mowing down tiny little walnut trees.

The solution is to plant the squirrels who plant the nuts! BTW we have the same issue with our acorns and hickory nuts and the litte tents pop up EVERYWHERE each spring and before we got Gutter Helmet they sprouted in the gutters as well!
