Goin' to the Big Easy for a week.
Stayin' in the Quarter.
1st time there.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner...
Looking to make this a gastronomically memorable experience.
Soooo where should we go for the best authentic Cajun food in town (won't have a car).
From Po'Boys and Red beans/rice to gumbo, jambalaya and etouffee... wanna do it all!
where to go?  (..if you came to San Diego, I'd send you to totally different places than where the guide books would send you)
Our one nod to tourist/tradition is a reservation for dinner at Commanders Palace.

I highly recommend both Dragos and OceanA for seafood. They are in a league of their own. Not sure if you will still be in town, but if you are I will be in NO on Monday. Give me a call and we will hook up and eat a few sacks of oysters and a dozen or so redfish. Name is Scottie. #228-627-5400.

Location- Just "this side" of Biloxi, Ms.

    Status- Standing by.

Here you geaux......we have so many great places to eat, when friends come in town we take them to:

"Cochon"  http://www.cochonrestaurant.com/ < For a taste of cajun you will love it.

For New Orleans creole food, I highly recommend "Herbsaint" http://nomenu.com/?p=2346

My favorite neighborhood N.O. restaurant is:"Mandina's"  located on Canal St
http://mandinasrestaurant.com/nola/main-menu/  < I absolutely love their food. It's a old New Orleans Sicilian family that cooks traditional New Orleans food with Italian influence.

The place to get a muffaletta is at Central Grocery

    Also Drago's is great

I almost forgot the best restaurant of the group:  Cafe' Adelaide  If you only go to one of these that I recommend , make it this one.
I can't recommend this place enought. Please don't pass on this one . You will LOVE the food.

many many more I can suggest if you'd like..........

Looks like we are fated to not meet this trip as we fly out the 13th...

Of course, you could come to San Diego!  I'd order something special from Flannery's (http://www.flannerybeef.com/) and let YOU give us an Egg lesson or two. hahaha

Have put them ALL on or list.  Like I mentioned, this is a food experience trip. We'll play tourist next time, so any/all recommendations are appreciated.

How 'bout breakfast/coffee... we'll be only a few blocks from Cafe Du Monde but how many beignets can a guy eat?

@UncleFred - -  For a real New Orleans "Yat" experience"... for breakfast try Betsy's Pancake house.
This place is real New Orleans. We love going to Betsy's for a good breakfast.
You can get their easily by taking the Canal St. Street Car.

Also I hear great things about The Ruby Slipper
Haven't been there yet, but I plan on going soon. My daughter loves the place.

  • I checked out Cafe' Adelaide and will probably walk over there Monday after checking in (walk because I checked out the bar menu).

I see on Google maps that
Cafe' Adelaide is a block or so from another place I've been told about called Mothers? any thoughts about there?

Mother's is good. Lots of people love it. but it is touristy as you can get. I don't bother with that place.

A nice place to grab a sandwich (if you are in the Quarter, which I'm sure you'll be at one point), is Verti Marte.  Get the "All That Jazz" sandwich.  You can thank me later.

You guys are making me hungry and home-sick.

I, too would avoid Mother's. It used to be a good spot for good, spicy-flavored food. It has changed over the years, and not for the better.

    Cafe' Adelaide is a must!

R'evolution, Commanders Palace...there are some threads on this.

A few years back, first trip to NOLA, we went to Commander's palace, and I had the trio of soups app. I can still taste the turtle soup finished with sherry tableside.

Having side that, I would go to R'Evolution over Commander's anytime. R" Evolution is one of the best restaurants I have been to in many many years, for a number of reasons. After a long time, a restaurant got it right in terms of service to the customer (service is generally MUCH better in NOLA than other cities). Major plus was that we did not care for the options on their degustation menu, so we picked our own for the same price. I can't say enough good things about this place.

Herbsaint, and Cochon were also very good, but I don't live in NOLA and am not up to date on what the city has to offer.

    All That Jazz
a medley of grilled ham, turkey & shrimp, swiss & american cheese accompanied by grilled mushrooms, tomatoes, on grilled french bread with our original "wow sauce"

Ya, that sounds like a winner!

We'll be staying a Place D'Armes so most all these places are within walking distance.

    Thanks for the tip!

BTW, 1 All That Jazz is plenty for 2 people.  Its a very rich, warm sandwich.

Pralines are everywhere.  Trust your nose.

2 thumbs up for Cafe' Adelaide... 2 thumbs down for Mothers.  I'll go with those in the know.

A friend told me to "do" a place named the Gumbo Shop and a coffee place across the street named Spitfire Coffee?  figuring they are on the next block they would certainly be convenient if they are good...

    What say you.

I don't know about who makes the "best" pralines. However, here are a couple of places that make them and they taste pretty good:

    Aunt Sally's Pralines (750 St. Charles Ave.; 810 Decatur St., 800-642-7257; www.auntsallys.com)

Loretta's Authentic Pralines (2101 North Rampart New Orleans, LA 70116; http://www.lorettaspralines.com/)

Just don't say "Pray-leens" in New Orleans and you will do just fine.

There are others but they are not close to where you will be staying.

    @UncleFred -- all pralines taste good, but I'd only eat one unless you want to develop diabetes -;

For lunch ya gotta try Parkway bakery:   http://www.parkwaypoorboys.com/menu.html

Awesome good poor-boys! I'd recommend a shrimp poor-boy dressed. They are also in the running for best roast beef poor-boy in the city.. Damn good place!

If you are looking for a great dessert place and coffee. My personal favorite is: Angelo Brocato's
Cannoli are wonderful. We order them all the time for every one of our family get-togethers.
It's a must in my book.

The Gumbo Shop is okay. Sometimes the food can be on the salty side.

I'm not familiar with Spitfire Coffee. However, you owe it to yourself to experience an order of beignets and a hot cup of cafe au lait. The chickory will wake you up!

Do not wear dark clothing if you go. You will thank me later.

    @TigerTony,

    Parkway is an excellent recommendation.

However, I thought @UncleFred was trying to stay within walking distance of his hotel and experience Cajun/Creole culinary.

I get carried away sometimes. But he could walk to and from the street car. Short walks and he'll need the excersize. ;)

We've experienced beignets.  Just outside of Disneyland in Anaheim, Ralph Brennen has a restaurant named the Jazz Kitchen. We have dinner there 3-4 times a year (Love their Gumbo Ya-Ya) and in the mornings they sell fresh beignets and cafe au lait.

The rub is that I can "drop" the Commander's Palace name in a conversation out here and people have a good chance to know what I'm talking about. So even though we want great dining experiences, a case can be made for name recognition too.

I would try R'Evolution and lie to your friends and mention Commander's to them.
