Four butts along with a terrible weekend.... (One lonely picture to boot)

For work we have a snack day for peoples birthday every month.  For October, there wasn't anyone with a October birthday.  So they wanted to know if I was willing to make BBQ.  I said sure.  Was looking forward to it all week.

Fast forward to Friday night.  Started feeling a slight pinch feeling in my throat.  Thought, well could be sinus related.  So lets just let it ride.

Saturday came, throat still about the same.  We all (my wife, little girl, and I) went out and about in Greensboro about all day.  Went to Harris Teeter to pick up the butts for the BBQ.

Got home about 3pm, was watching most of the UNC vs. ND game and thought man I am getting tired and cold.  Told the wife, I think I may go lay down.  I asked her to wake me in about an hour.  In that time I could not get warm at all (and it wasn't a cold day).  I will also add you my little girl started coughing along with other cold type symptoms.

I wake and I think "I better take my temp", this is odd.  Take my temp and it is at 102.8°.  I am like damn it.  I got something and I have to cook all this BBQ tomorrow.  Now my little girl is not doing any better either.  Call the Peds office after hours.  Her nose was clogged and she was coughing that sounded like a dying dog.  They gave me things to do to help her out hopefully.

Well some time passes by and she is doing worse it appears.  Called back, they tell me about the same thing.  I do as they say.  Then she acted like she couldn't breath and I freaked out.  She did calm down, but I called back to the peds.  The women then heard my little girl and her trouble breathing and told me to take her to the ER.  So off we went, and scared as hell to boot.

Go to the ER and I have never seen so many people start to help.  I start panicking seeing so many people in the room with her and my wife and I am trying to get the insurance crap straightened out.  I felt like I was in a damn sitcom or movie scene or something with some trauma going on.  My little girl was in major distress because she couldn't breathe well.  When I finally got to getting the car parked I was a hot mess out there and then hurrying back in.

She had a bad case of the croup.  I had never heard of this in my life.  They had to give her two breathing treatments along with a steroid to help expand her airway.  Also a chest x-ray to ensure nothing was in her lungs was done as well.

They monitored her and everything they done was a success.  We were released at 2am Sunday.  The doctor said he was a little worried about her when he seen her.  The triage nurse said she was surprised to see us leave by the way she was.  I was blessed beyond belief to be leaving with my little girl.

Wake up around 9am thinking about everything along with the BBQ I have to take to work.  I didn't get the lump I needed the day before.  We were going to go out later to pick up other groceries, but never did Saturday.

Needless to say, I head to Wally world get groceries for the week and lump and other items for the BBQ.  Finally get the butts on at 12 noon.  Not when I wanted to.  Throughout the day I started feeling progressively worse.  I was popping Motrin for my fever, but it kept coming and going.   I was starting to worry at this point.  I had to press on as people were counting on me.

Finally, at 12 midnight, the butts are done, and I am too.  Still battling a fever and sore throat.  Now, I have to get up at 5:30am to get to work.  Nice, huh?  I woke up every hour on the hour between the time I laid down till 5:30am.  Throat was killing me.  I thought "what and the heck is going on".  I get up and my wife is like "you're not going to work are you?".  I said, "yes, I have committed to this and I am going to drop this off and then go to the doctor".  She knew I wasn't feeling well when I said I am going to the doctor.  Bad thing is, I have an hour commute to work from home, then about an hour commute back to my doctor, then a 30min ride home from the doctor.  I was planning on taking a nap in the car somewhere if need be.

Do all that running, and get to the doctor to have a really bad case of strep throat.  Doc told me I should have came a day earlier and if I would have went more it could have been more serious.  Anywho, two shots in the butt, couple swabs for tests, and antibiotic later here I come home.  Did some great sleeping, but felt bad as my wife was alone with the little girl that was cranky because of her illness.  I couldn't be around her due to what I had going on.

All in all, my little girl is doing better.  Nights are tough for her breathing, but they say that is common.  I am feeling better by the minute and I am looking forward to going to work.  I hear the BBQ was a hit.

Oh, the one lone picture, here you are.  Behind is my table still waiting on my piece of granite (got that today BTW).

Good to hear about your daughter. Croup and RSV are the pits. It's neb treatment and wait, neb treatment and wait, etc until the kid's breathing normalizes. Nice to hear it only took two. I can't imagine that helpless feeling as they struggle to breathe.

Glad to hear your daughter is okay. Same thing happened to my daughter when she was about 10 years old. I've never been more scared in all my life as when I saw her struggling to breath. Turns out she had been coughing so hard her trachea became bruised and started to swell shut. I've had strep throat also so I understand how you felt at the time.

I applaud you for pulling that off with strep and a sick kiddo. Strep wipes me out. Croup is some scary stuff. When my daughter was little, she scared us pretty bed. We went camping on the beach and her symptoms where masked because of the thick foggy air. Once we went back inland to a dry house, we were awakened to our daughter barking like a seal. Off to the ER we went. I wish your family well

Thanks for all the kind words (and appears my post was rather lengthy, so thanks for reading that too).

My little girl is still have some issues, really only a cough and when she lays down to go to bed.  Hopefully soon she will be back to normal.

The only thing about the BBQ at work was I had many other sign up to bring sides (15 people) and I didn't have their contact information.  I didn't want them to bring what they had to bring and me not bring the Q.  The other 17 helped chip in on meat and supplies for the event.

Thankfully the RSV test was negative.  They did exactly what you indicated too.  I applaud the staff that helped with her, they were awesome.  However, like I said they scared the crap out of me all of them working on her at one time.

I hope she never has this again.  Fingers crossed.

Man, what an ordeal. It is really scary when kids get a strange illness. I've been there. Your mind starts to think of all kinds of horrible things.

Cooking butts all night and then driving 2 hrs round trip to drop them off is definitely taking one for the team. Solid work.

Holy Cow. I thought for sure this story would end with "and I left the pork butts on the counter to spoil". But you still managed to pull off the cook. That's impressive. Dads (and moms) are never more scared than when our kids are sick. Glad everyone is on the mend and the folks at work had their BBQ.

    Thanks again everyone.

The "bleeding" didn't stop today.  About 9:30am, I got a call from my wife saying daycare called and my little girl was running a fever.  So I left work to go get her and ended up taking her to the pediatrician, again to get her checked out.  They believe it was her immunization shots that were affecting her and still recovering from the croup.  They (daycare) said she was not her self and I explained, "well yeah, I told you that this morning when I dropped her off".  They are apparently a little sacred with a lot of sickness going around.  So they take her temp under the arm say she had a temp.  Well heck, if she was warm from nap or other various ways, she could run a temp under her arm.

At the doctor she was running a 100.8° (rectal), which is considered low grade.

My insurance is getting a workout I tell you....

    Sat - ER
Sun - Check-up at pediatrician from ER
Mon - My turn for strep
    Tues - Her immunization shots
Weds - Take her back to pediatrician to ensure she is not sick.

I am ready to be done with this mess.
